That was a pleasant surprise! You can find the Minkus article online here:
http://ellensplace.net/ar_stamp.html

I often cite it and quote from it when discussing "collecting qua collecting" with my numismatic friends. You can find series of coins on stamps. I wrote them up for The Numismatist and met online this Hungarian aficiando whose site is very nice: http://kovasati.gportal.hu/

My brother got me re-introduced to writing letters. When I goto the post office for stamps, I always ask for commemoratives.

The post office has its problems but they never lost 90 million credit cards at one time.

Well, those are simple facts... that the post office has problems, and that they haven't lost 90 million credit card numbers. But one assumes that these two facts are joined with "but" in a single sentence for an reason. The only reason is that the post office, which is a strange quasi-governmental agency, and those who lost the 90 million credit card numbers are private organizations. So, the implication is what? That it is better to have all organizations be governmental? Why would anyone write that, here on RoR?

The lesson I draw from MEM's statement is that both governments and corporations are abstract entities run by human beings who have human imperfections and that we should not place all our good faith in either.
