True Love is Expressed by Matthew Graybosch, August 12, 2003
"From the myth of the immaculate conception and the claim that Jesus of Nazareth was born of a virgin to the demands of conservatives ..."

Only the Sith deal in absolutes, Post 8 Marcus Bachler Monday, May 23 - 2:19pm
"Somehow Anakin was an immaculate conception between his mother and "midichlorians"."

These statesments are the results of intellectual misconceptions.  You are not alone in your ignorance: many Christians misunderstand this.  The immaculate conception refers to Mary, not to Jesus.  Mary was without original sin so that she would be a worthy vessel for the Savior.  For my proof, I offer authority.

"In the Constitution Ineffabilis Deus of 8 December, 1854, Pius IX pronounced and defined that the Blessed Virgin Mary 'in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin.'

"The question does not concern the immaculateness of the generative activity of her parents. Neither does it concern the passive conception absolutely and simply (conceptio seminis carnis, inchoata), which, according to the order of nature, precedes the infusion of the rational soul. The person is truly conceived when the soul is created and infused into the body. Mary was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin at the first moment of her animation, and sanctifying grace was given to her before sin could have taken effect in her soul. "

Much, much, much more is to be found in The Catholic Encyclopedia at this link to the Immaculate Conception http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/07674d.htm

Michael two things:

(1) Who cares?

(2) "Pius IX pronounced and defined that the Blessed Virgin Mary 'in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God"

How the is Pope Pius IX an authority on Mary's life? Did he jump in a time machine and stalk her? I suppose that, as Pope, he might have had conversation with God. If so where is the tape recording?

Robert, while I sympathize with your essential "so what?" I think this is a common misconception that needed clarifying.  For the sake of simply understanding something about Catholic doctrine, that is - a something, I'll add, that has permeated our culture and almost anyone has an idea of. It just happens to be the wrong idea of what the term meant.

And Kelly Elmore, if you're reading this - did Michael somehow transform himself into a fly & listen in on our conversation this weekend on this very subject?

After Kelly explained what immaculate conception meant, I said something to the effect of Robert's point 2.  But that's no more odd, I guess, than anything else about Christianity.

There are those who view the Immaculate Conception as more of a metaphor than a myth- that on the whole it represents an internal process of rebirth, individual spiritual rebirth. Many pieces of art in world religion are pieces of "objective art"- their purpose is to convey very specific information.
