Marcus, who is that guy who posts those special effects?  Can we ask him to get a waving flag over here?

As an American citizen, I'd like to thank all of the well wishes from those in other lands!  You seem to understand that Independence Day is above all a celebration of individual human liberty - a concept which knows no borders.

Well, as Pete said, it's "above all a celebration of individual human liberty"....

To all the oppressed of the world, wherever you are, this light shines for you. Happy Independence Day!                              "I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of these is freedom." - Ayn Rand

I didn't have any fireworks, so I just went on a bonk fest.

Thank you all. Wonderful!

Who put Star-Spangled Banner there? I just broke up when that started. Thank you.

Michael - sounds like you weren't short of fireworks after all, then :-)

Lindsay, that was me with the music.

I posted it with some trepidation; some people (myself included, under normal circumstances) are quite averse to the idea of music on web pages.

Given the circumstances however, I thought it was warranted - I'm glad you liked it.

I know it's a little past the day, but for those of you who do not live in the D.C. area, or those who do and did not see the display on the mall, picture this:

A half-hour of fireworks so spectacular that one cannot help but be moved. Off-whites, greens, blues, reds, oranges, purples all in starbursts, puffy clouds, raining willow trees and shapes that only fire raining from the sky could make. This was set to a musical score of the 1812 overture followed to the finale with the Star Spangled Banner. Mix in thousands of people filled with feelings of patriotism, freedom and love for their lives, oohing and aahing.

Almost a week later the event still makes my heart pound in my chest, my breath shallow and my stomach drop. It was like falling in love all over again.
