Dean-
I thought I would just stick this question here rather than start a new forum entry; how hard would it be to put a "printable version" link at the top(or bottom) of each article? Many sites do this, and it would give us a stripped down text-only version to print out.

Putting a link there would be easy. Having the link lead to a printable form would be harder. Assuming that all of the articles have valid html (a bad assumption on this site), it would take a day or two to implement. Add two more days for testing. Add two more days or more if you want almost every single article to be compatible.

The easiest solution for me is if you just copy what you want, and in MS Word or OpenOffice, go to Edit->Paste_Special, and then "paste without formatting" or something very simular to that. The end result is plain text.

OpenOffice is free. It also has File->Export->PDF. : )

If this is the right place to make request for web site tweaks..

Could you please add a 'mark all read' button with the unread message section of the front page of SOLO?

I very much like the 'Unread messages out of the last 500' feature at the bottom with the 1st sentence preview of posts. It is essential to making it feasible for me to digest the now-heavy amount of SOLO content. However, I only go into the 20-30% of posts that interest me, and the other posts remain on the page as unread.

I can go back to the top, two clicks in, and two back-button presses back, to mark all forum posts read, but it seems much more natural to have this commonly-used ability on the front page with the unread message list. Let me know what you think of this (or if there is some alternate more efficient way to navigate the forums that most people use). Thanks.

AAron, that sounds like a nice feature. (Jody's was good too). Its just... I've got a lot of high priority things to do in my life. I'll see what I can do.

If trading value for value wasn't made so difficult by government force... *sigh*.

Another way to do this is to get lynx (see lynx.org) and pipe the output of lynx -dump to your printer.

I use 'links -dump' instead of lynx. 'links' handles tables better than lynx.

I suggest that those who want enhancements to the site pony up some money for Dean's fine efforts.

I'm not sure what this is a reference to specifically. Are you saying you're looking for a way to monetize the site - subscriptions, advertising, donations, etc. - and being tied by regulations? Do you need help with any development? .NET, LAMP or something else (.CGI isn't a dead giveaway)?
