Thanks, Joe. Good work! I was hoping someone would correct me. I have set my DVR to record the movie anyway.

Shanghai Express: Marlene Dietrich, Ana May Wong

Friday, 6 June, 2:00am (Set your recorder before bed thursday.)

This 1932 pre-code classic is unavailable on US format DVD or VCR. Dietrich plays a women of questionable repute. It is a racy thriller as a British Officer tries to evade Chinese officials on a train with his ex-lover's help. There is an implied lesbian relationship between Wong & "Shanghai Lily" Dietrich. Directed by Joseph von Sterberg, it is one of the best movies of its day.

Happy to second your endorsement of Shanghai Express.  Besides being a wonderful story with wonderful characters, it's the most beautiful movie visually that I've ever seen.  It also has the all-time great line in movie history (you'll know it when it comes up).

Did you know that the movie has some roundabout connections to Rand?  von Sternberg and Dietrich were, just after this, set to make a movie of Red Pawn, though the deal fell through.  Barbara Branden tells the story.  In his autobiography, von Sternberg says Rand told him Shanghai Express was one of her own favorites.  It's as close as we get to what the three of them might have done together.  Dietrich reportedly attended the Hollywood opening of Rand's play Penthouse Legend, later Night of January 16.

More than a decade later, Rand and her husband bought a house in the Valley that Richard Neutra had built for von Sternberg, although I don't think he was the owner at the time.

Thanks, Peter. I was aware of Rand's knowing Dietrich and von Sternberg. This movie is decades ahead of its time. (Or two years before the "code"?) And a definite must-see.

We aim to please.  You really ought to see it on a full-size movie screen to get the visual impact.  I never caught the lesbian overtones.  Seems to me both characters were so busy boinking every man in sight that they would have been hard put to find the time.
