| | I think most people fall into a couple of categories. Firstly, most people in America are born Christians. It's a situation similar to how many if not most Jews hardly practice their religion. It becomes part of them and it's hard to completely renounce it, even if it is in-name-only. "Former me" falls into this category.
Secondly, there is the "Well, we're all sinners" or "Everybody's got to live a little" type person. This is much more off-putting. The person is basically a mistaken pragmatist, and thinks that in order to best be able to practice his faith he needs to go away from it from time to time. Either that or he thinks he can pick and choose which parts to follow. This includes practicing gay Catholics, women who want to be priests, etc. This type of person has never made any sense to me.
So to offer an alternative viewpoint, it's almost nice to see a Christian that hardly practices their faith. Probably 80-90% of my friends are Catholics. They are relatively secular and un-boneheaded. Perhaps over time I'll show them the error in their ways. But it's the religious people with fewer contradictions that really disgust me.
