Wrong Joe.  They were Mac users trying to use PCs.

Matthew,

Will most games run on Linux?  I also remember reading something about Linux not liking serial ATA drives.

Matthew,

If you know of good substitutes for Word and Excel on Linux, I'd like to read more about them.  I'd be happy to dump Windows and all other MS software at the first moment it becomes feasible.

Sarah, commercial game support on Linux is somewhat lacking, though you can play Flash games through your browser, Linux also comes with clones of Solitaire, Tetris, and the like. Some people have gotten games like The Sims working, but it's complicated.

As for serial ATA drives: my machine has a SATA drive, and Ubuntu Linux works with it easily enough. You'd just have to do a bit of tinkering to make your CD/DVD drives work.

Jeff, if you want to chuck Office without taking the plunge into Linux, try OpenOffice.org. I recommend the beta (1.9) version; it works damned well already unless you need support for VBA macros. Also, if you haven't already, try the Firefox browser.

More computer humor available here. And if anybody has Linux questions, email me. Just please put SOLO in the subject line if you do, so I can pick it out of all the penis enlargement, mortgage, and "Do you want a fuck buddy" spam. :)

Here's my all-time favorite:

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts: "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am ?"
The man below says: "Yes you're in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field."
"You must work in Customer Support", says the balloonist.
"I do", replies the man, "how did you know ?"
"Well", says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but it's of no use to anyone."
The man below says "You must work in management."
"I do", replies the balloonist, "but how did you know ?"
"Well", says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help. And you're in the same position as you were before we met, but now it's my fault."

Reminds me of when I worked for IBM's Office Products Division in the seventies.

I was in charge of the dispatch office and received a call late in the afternoon from a corporation president complaining that his new dictation unit was without power. It was a holiday in Rhode Island (V-J Day for victory over Japan, now celebrated in "politically correct" fashion as Victory Day) but our office was open to service Massachusetts and Connecticut customers (V-J Day was celebrated only in RI.) There was also a hurricane warning in effect and the mayor had asked all businesses to send their employees home.

When I told him I would relay his call to his service representative in the morning, he exploded with anger, shouting so loud that I had to hold the receiver at arm's length. He insisted we send someone out immediately to fix his unit.

I turned the call over to my manager who also held the receiver at arm's length (sitting at the adjoining desk, I could still hear the guy perfectly.)

It ended up that this knucklehead didn't have his unit plugged in. And what's the punch line? This guy went on to become governor of the state twenty years later. Explains a lot. He was an awful governor and his half-witted arrogance became legendary.

Linux plays newer OpenGL games, for example Doom 3. But you pretty much have to have an nVidia card. ATI doesn't release good linux drivers.

There's a typo in your post.  It should read: ATI doesn't release good drivers. :)

Jeff, you may want to try the Xandros operating system www.xandros.com. Comes with the very good Openoffice.org office suite incorporated, which is an excellent, compatible (and "free") alternative to Microsoft office. It's linux packaged up for beginners - there are others like this, but I think this is a good one to go for - you can also keep your Windows as Xandros is really clever at splitting up your computer hard drive to allow you to choose between the two each time you start up.

I tried for a while, but ended up coming back to MS - Windows XP is actually a very good operating system, and for my mind, well worth the investment. I'm serious!

When I worked for HP, I had a stint in software and tech support on the HP3000 minicomputer.

Nothing as extreme as the Wall Street Journal list, but one day a young programmer trainee came in to work on the computer at the district office. He was doing something involving repeated copying and moving of files. After some time, he came over to me and said that he had been doing the same thing for hours but now the computer was not recognizing a common command ... and he figured it was because the computer had been working hard all day and was getting tired and its focus was slipping.
