I've seen too many "Americans" who are NOT at work. This one falls flat.

Ayn Rand: "I CHOSE to be an American. What did you do, other than being born here?"

Agreed. Very sad, too. (Although some states have taken measures to prevent that.)

I have to agree with Robert (especially in his Paul Lynde voice).

However, Martin's joke does have a point worth considering, but, not in terms of ethnic-groups or nationalities per se; I really don't know how it could be re-written, but I'm sure there's something there to focus on. --- Yes, there are mucho 'immigrants' of varied ethnic-groups/nationalities who came here thinking of 'the land of opportunity' and became citizens or just 'legals' (not to mention the remainder!). But, there are way too many who also came thinking of nothing but the place being a govt-supported welfare-oriented money-tree (which is where Martin's focused on...here...sloppily). How to distinguish the two is the prob and, in terms of 'jokes', Martin's definitely falls flat.

     Give it another try, Martin.

While on a fishing trip in Wisconsin, I once saw a hat for sale at a rural bait and tackle shop, it simply read:

Keep working - Millions on welfare depend on you!

I bought the hat.

It is simple. All of the people in the joke identifiy with the country of their birth, not America. For me, that is enough indication of the type of immigrants the joke is about.

Racist?  Not at all.  This joke exposes the current scourge of welfare statism and its attraction of unproductive immigrants.  It also exposes the problem of immigrants who still identify themselves by their national origin and fail to assimilate fully into American culture enough to call themselves "Americans."

At least the Somali in this story sought to express gratitude to the people footing the bill.  That is more than can be said for many others who receive such unearned benefits.

I sanctioned this joke.  Thank you for posting it, Marty.

Those who considered this joke "racist" need to check your premises.  Allow me to analyze it for you:

A Somali arrives in Minneapolis as a new immigrant to the United States.

So far, so good.

He stops the first person he sees walking down the street and says, "Thank you, Mr. American, for letting me in this country,

He shows gratitude.  That is very good.

and giving me housing, food stamps, free medical care and free education!"

All right, he knows the nation offers welfare.  If he is here legally and playing by the rules, he is just doing what every legal resident can do.

But the passer-by says "You are mistaken. I am Mexican".

This exposes the problem of immigrants who do not identify themselves as Americans.

The man goes on and encounters another passer-by. "Thank you for having such a beautiful country here in America!"
The person says "I no American. I'm Vietnamese."

This further exposes the problem of immigrants who do not master English, the language of Americans.

The new arrival walks further, and the next person he sees he stops, shakes his hand and says "Thank you for the wonderful America!"
That person puts up his hand and says "I am from Middle East. I am not an American!"

Oh, dear.  Need I say more?

He finally sees a nice lady and asks suspiciously, "Are you an American?"
She says, "No, I am from Russia!"

At least she speaks English well.

So he is puzzled, and asks her, "Where are all the Americans?"
The Russian lady looks at her watch, shrugs, and says, "At work!"

A fitting punchline!  Who else would be providing the revenue to finance the "housing, food stamps, free medical care and free education"?

I really hate it when people try to see racism where none exists.  Someone on a local freethought list accused Robert Tracinski of "racism" when he commented on the legions of welfare recipients sitting in their own trash and shooting at rescuers in this article which I shared with that list:

http://tiadaily.com/php-bin/news/showArticle.php?id=1026

After some arguments against the accusation, I finally realized that some people will see racism no matter what.  Evidently that disorder afflicts some people here as well.

The ones who see racism everywhere are the ones who themselves are the racists...
Remember, racism is a low form of tribalism, so those who cry racism identify with the group, the tribe - that "welfare c'est moi" mindset, for instance...
