This is a joke? On your knees is only a powerful position for those standing up, and over you.

It is an unintended double entendre.  Think about ... er, um ... oral pleasures and then re-read the joke.  Would a church really mean to say that given how much power an expert provider of such pleasures would have over the recipient of those pleasures?

Still reminds me of a church in my hometown who's sign guy was so lazy for several months no one realized the advertisment for a revival and the sentance "Satan's greatest rival" merged into the blasphemous (yet hysterical)

"Satan's greatest revival"

The one standing is not the one 'in control', as Camille Paglia would argue. Think about it , Dave. --- Unless we're talking 'bondage', of course, but, that's an extra presumption outside the double-entendre.

It is funny that the church pastor didn't think of double-meanings here...unless of course, s/he's totally unfamiliar with the meaning; you know, 'missionary-position' only, and all that.

There is meaning within meaning within meaning here. Besides the obvious (well, perhaps not so obvious to the pastor) double entendre, we have the allegory in domination and submission of "topping from the bottom" where the submissive (on his/her knees) controls the situation dispite the dominants advantages in freedom of movement, action, and potential control. The submissive's power is subtle but absolute. At any time the submissive can end the game and move on. The dominant recognizes this and submits to this power for his own pleasure, evermindful that there are limits that must not be breached.

In society, the people are submissive to government, but the real power is with the people. Government that is not mindfull of this arrangement or attempts to dominate too harshly will discover where the real power lies, much to their sorrow and ruin.

Glenn Reynolds' "An Army of Davids", subtitled "How Markets and Technology Empower Ordinary People to Beat Big Media, Big Government, and Other Goliaths" --I have not read it yet-- has been commented several times at radioblogger.com, a blog worth keeping an eye on.
