More than once I've been moved to think: "He's not serious!"

I hesitated over that word, but decided to trust my sense of its meaning. Glad to see that I was right! However, "risible" does sound a bit snotty. "Laughable" would have been better.

No, but erudition prejudices me against a person. It often indicates an extensive mind, rather than an intensive one. Someone who is as concerned about what others think about an issue as he is about what is true.

Do You Find That Wisibew?

Centurion: "It's a joke-name sir, like Naughtius Maximus, or Biggus Diccus." Pilate: "Biggus Diccus? One of my best fwiends in Wome is named Biggus Diccus! Do you find that wisibew, centuwion?" (Muffled Lauhter) "And do you know what his wife's name is? Incontinentia..." (More laughter) "Incontinentia Buttox." (Centurion laughs out loud) Pilate: "Thwow him to the wions!"

A good knowledge, Luke, of Monty Python will often both expand your vocabulary and serve as a substitute for reading much of philosophy and the classics.
