Andrew,

I had the good fortune to catch the Side Street Strutters on a rare (unique?) trip to upstate South Carolina earlier this month.

You're in for a treat.

Man, those are some small towns!  I've driven through some of them on cross-country road trip I did right after college.  A gig's a gig, though....enjoy the show!

Hi, folks. The band I'm travelling with is the Side Street Strutters Jazz Band. They work in the New Orleans area of Disneyland, and I am their main sub for travel dates like this tour of Colorado, Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa (my home state), and Indiana. (I am a member of the Disneyland Band, which is hq'd on Main Street.) There is a nice write-up of us as individual members (I am not in any of the photos) at this web address:  http://www.sidestreetstrutters.com/artists.html

We had great crowds in Miles City and Dillon, and we're looking forward to the short drive over to Anaconda for tomorrow (Tuesday) night's concert -- and I'm looking forward to meeting and briefly visiting with Andrew after the concert. :-)

Yes, Prof. Campbell (Bob :-) and his family came to our concert at Clemson earlier this month, and we had a delightful, but too short chat after the concert. And he is right -- the music is a real treat, especially to anyone who likes the popular music of the first half of the 20th century, which is basically traditional New Orleans ("dixieland") jazz, blues, and Big Band swing. I always come back to my "day gig" with an improved attitude after concertizing with the Strutters.

To those who wonder about recordings:

(1) The Strutters have a number of CDs available, and I think those can be ordered from their website, but the only CD I am on by them is co-leader Rob Verdi's "Prose and Conn-versations;" I have a pretty decent solo on the tune "Love Letters Straight from Your Heart."   http://www.sidestreetstrutters.com/Connosax.html

(2) I have a duo jazz CD which I'm very proud of, "The Art of the Duo," with pianist Ben Di Tosti. It contains a number of standards, as well as Saint-Saeans' "The Swan" and an original by me entitled "The Hazards of Loving You." It can (and should!) be ordered from either http://www.gemtone.com or http://www.cdbaby.com

(3) I have three choruses of blues on "Crystal Room Blues" on the CD "Turn" by Doug McDonald.
http://www.seabreezejazz.com/home.html

(4) I have two longish solos on the Don Miller Orchestra's CD "This Swingin' Life".Unfortunately, this CD (1998) seems to be out of stock on Amazon.com and available only for a hideously high price from someone in New York. If you're really interested, let me know, and maybe I can get some copies directly from Don himself, but he disbanded us several years ago, so we're not an active unit any more.

Hope this is helpful to those interested and not too shamefully self-promotional. :-)

Happy listening!
Roger Bissell, post-Randian musician/writer

P.S. -- anyone in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Indiana interesting in possibly attending a Strutters concert in the next 2-1/2 weeks? Let me know, and I'll send you a list of places and dates.

I'd love to catch up with the Strutters, but sadly none of Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Indiana will be seeing me. Hope the tour goes well.

Roger,
From a former slush pumper: may your embouchure always be true.  Have a good tour.

Glenn, I appreciate your encouragement. In October of next year, I will celebrate my 50th anniversary of playing trombone, and as this mortal shell ages, I have had to avail myself of various warmup and practice techniques not initially needed in order to keep my face in prime working order. Everything still works pretty well, and because of the gradual seasoning of my melodic and improvisational style, I think I'm playing better than ever -- except for some loss of stamina or endurance of my muscle tone. Like all athletes, I am fighting against entropy, but I expect to enjoy playing at a reasonable level of competence and acceptability for at least another 15 years or so (I'm 57).

Jonathan, here are the Strutters dates for the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin:

Thu Sep 29, Rugby ND -- high school
Fri Sep 30, Roseau MN -- high school
Sat Oct 1, Thief River Falls WI -- high school
Sun Oct 2, Crookston MN -- high school
Tue Oct 4, Eagle River WI -- Northland Pines H.S.
Wed Oct 5, Chippewa Falls WI -- Heyde Center
Thu Oct re6, Park Rapids MN -- high school
Fri Oct 7, Fergus Falls MN -- middle school
Sat Oct 8, Redfield SD -- SD Center Auditorium
Mon Oct 10, Windom MN -- Arts Recreation Center

Performance times are all 7:30 PM, except for Chippewa Falls (6:30 PM). Hope to see you!

Best,
Roger Bissell, Post-Randian musician/writer

Thanks, Roger. Hopefully a few jazz-fan friends and I will be able to make it to one of the gigs.

Btw, Thief River Falls is in Minnesota, not Wisconsin, and I hope that the "WI" rather than the "Thief" is the typo in that line -- it would really suck if you had to travel to River Falls, WI one day and then back to the Crookston, MN area the next.

Best,
J

Wow, Jonathan, I will bring your correction about Thief River Falls to the attention of our road manager/clarinet player/driver. He is usually meticulous about this things! (It is the Minnesota town, since our itinerary lists the drive from Roseau MN as being only 64 miles and to Crookston MN as being only 44 miles.)

Brant, I don't play ~for~ gas, but unfortunately, I have sometimes had to play ~with~ gas. I have to be very careful playing loud notes when that happens. :-/

Best,
Roger
