I say the remake about two months ago, and the original more than 15 years ago.
From what I recall of the original it was a sincere 70's style horror, with a nice build up of tension and a memorable twist. A horror with an intellectual point.
The remake brought all the worst aspects of Hollywood to it: big on style, short on subtlety. The plot was laboured, the dialogue obvious ("this time, let's REALLY spell the point out, just to remove any requirement for independent thought"), and there was lots of schmaltz and cutesy one-liners for the big-name actors.
But the biggest problem was that the main plot twist seemed to be revealed far too early, so there was no tension or build-up at all. The audience seemed bored by the end of it.
