I've watched and enjoyed this film many times, too.

The hero in the end does manage to convince his aquarian rescuers that the human race isn't all bad.

Fortunate that he didn't have to convince a bunch of collectivists. : )

Seen the film a couple of times too. Good film. Even the bad guy was intelligent an capable - only he had become afflicted with madness and paranoia, skewing his decisions.

The problem-solving where Harris and Mastrantonio are trapped in the wrecked mini-sub, with ice-cold water flooding in and only one underwater suit, no way to share the scuba gear, and the main rig much too far away...her solution is unmatched in all story-telling! Wow.
Even the antagonist-in-our-midst element is technical and scientific in its development. That makes the final resolving elements that much more disappointing, to me. This is definitely an example of someone else's work that I would be inclined to re-work. I wonder if the story of the production of this movie involves a compromise that required the inclusion of those elements? Wish there were some way to find that out.

Mindy,

I'm guessing you are referring to the final scene, where Harris is saved. If so, I agree, the rest of the story was great in detailing their struggle to learn and to survive. The final scene was just a Hollywood ending - give viewers an exciting spectacle and save the protagonist so he can kiss the girl.

I have to confess I still guilty of enjoying that ending, even though, intellectually, you are right.

SPOILER ALERT: I'm about to discuss details you don't to know ahead of time!

Jay,
I meant the part where Mastrantonio says something like, "I drown, you tow me back to the rig, then resuscitate me. The water is near freezing, my body systems will shut down. You're a faster swimmer than I am. You'll be able to bring me back (to life.)"
After some protest, Harris puts the suit helmet on, she drowns, and, with appropriate suspense, it all happens as planned! Beat that!

After re-reading Jay's post: I'm not sure if you're referring to the ending, or my comments in my next previous post... Hope that spoiler alert works.

That scene you described is absolutely great, and fits well with the rest of the movie. The scene I thought you were objecting to is the very last, when they are all (grandly!) brought up to the surface. This was inconsistent with the rest... a Hollywood ending.
