Sam, you indeed miSamterstood me! Duncan Bayne's take on it is correct (Thanks Duncan!).

I did make an honest error. Checking my memory against an Internet transcript, the words I quoted were from Edward's introduction of Kerry's speech, not Kerry's speech per se. I must be getting old...

George, you are sharp yourself. And witty. There... nature's balance is restored. (Remind me never to play chess with you. You see 5 moves ahead!)

Kurt,

I liked your post.  I'm surprised that it hasn't gotten a response.

"And the ado about faith based grants?  does it matter?  Its the SAME THING.  There is no difference in taking money by force and granting it to others through a government program, based on a socialist-communist MORAL viewpoint (if it were not a Moral issue, why do it?), than doing it by a faith organization.  In fact, they probably are less corrupt than the various private corruption-riddled groups I see get government funds.  Here in Philadelphia, that money is going to some Islamic guy who is now arrested by the FBI, all he did was scam the money away.  Tell me that is better than giving it to at least a legitimate Christian charity?  It isn't better."

I like this point and I'd like to respond to it, and expand a little.  I've been a little puzzled by the inability of some objectivists to make a judgement call on the desirability of one of the candidates over the other: Bush or Kerry.  So, "stay home or vote for Badnarik".  I think this was quite a bit irrational.  On the one hand, you have a lifelong socialist, self promoting, anti-United States politician: Kerry.  On the other hand you have a principled conservative who is willing to state what he believes in and stand by his principles.  Admittedly, not a Objectivist, and happens to profess a belief in a Christian "God".  The major upset among objectivists seems to be Bush's professed belief in god.  He also has a deep admiration for the "founding fathers" of the United States, who interesting enough, I think, also believed in a Christian God.  I think Ayn Rand also admired the founders of the United States.  How does this make G.W. Bush worse than Kerry?  I am an atheist but not particularly afraid of Bush's plans to remake the U.S. is some fundamental religious way.  It's not going to happen.  I believe Socialism is a religion.  They definiely plan to take absolute control of everyones lives.  That's what I'm afraid of.  All of my votes have one purpose: advance individualism, defeat collectivism.  I think only incremental progress is possible.
