What I mean by not so bad - is that at this stage it looks like only one person was injured and that was the idiot carrying the detonator.

Yes, I heard this news on the radio. Truly despicable.

"Idiot" seems far too mild a term for these f---ers.  What makes it even more despicable (if that's even possible) is that as I understand it many Londoners were today commemorating the dead from the previous attack.

I'm glad it wasn't anywhere near as serious this time. This does nothing to dampen my enthusiasm for the city. (I don't live there at the moment but there's a chance I'll be working at a law firm in or not far outside of London before long.)

MH, ditto! Nor will this attack change my plans for my fall trip to London.

Thus far, this attack has the look of a "copy cat" type of operation, lacking the sophistication and devestation of an al Quaeda strike (that's not to say that the perpetrators weren't Islamists acting independently).  It's despicable any way you cut it, though.

I agree, but what surprises me is that it must have been four copy cats.
What are the odds of that? The BBC is reporting that it was detonators used and not bombs.
It is incredibly bizarre.

Anyway, whoever is behind this new attack it is trying to create fear in Londoners and those visiting London.

MH and Jason, I'm off to London on Saturday for the SOLOUK meeting. We're not afraid of the fuckers!

Latest news:

The detonation devices used were identical to the ones used two weeks ago. So rather than being a "copy cat" attack, it looks more like a botched attempt at a sequel by the same group.

If this is the case, it may help police to flush these terrorists out once and for all.

Weird.  They seem to be getting sloppy.  Maybe that's a sign that their international operations capability is weakening.

The good news is that the police just unloaded five bullets into one of the mother f***ers.

"I saw an Asian guy run onto the train hotly pursued by three plain-clothes police officers.

"One of them was carrying a black handgun - it looked like an automatic - they pushed him to the floor, bundled on top of him and unloaded five shots into him."

An Asian man? If he is related to the bombings that would be an odd twist.

So, either the security was more aware this time than the last time, or the bombers were not as well-trained as before. (A rushed strike?) If this is true, then obviously Al-Quaeda is in a hurry. One can only wonder why...

I don't think it was the Al-Quaeda network, but rather some sub-cell that tried to get more attention or use the groups ressources on their own. Or, the Quaeda wanted to get rid of their London cell before the Investigators get close to them. Especially, the latter version would not be surprising, but also taking the highly efficient organisation into mind.

Either way, I am not sorry that the mofu has injured himself. I am rather furious he is not dead...

Aaron - In the UK, when people refer to "Asian" they are usually talking about South Asia, i.e. Pakistan, India, etc.

Max - the security was more aware because the guys who carried out the failed attempts to bomb the Tube yesterday are still at large. Presumably they caught up with one of them today, who was maybe preparing to have another go.

The 'mother f***er' the police unloaded five bullets into was unconnected to the bombings.

Quoth "gary williams" --

"Damn, they wasted five whole bullets!"

They more than "wasted" them:

Delivering another shock to a city under siege, Scotland Yard conceded Saturday that a man shot and killed at close range by a police officer on an Underground train a day earlier was innocent of any involvement in the attempted bombings of the transit system last week.

And you'll dine out on this for ever, won't you, Tom, you piece of anarcho-Saddamite shit? In your world view, the war against terrorism, in the course of which mistakes will be made, shouldn't be being waged at all, since the terrorists are the true heroes in your book, aren't they, Tom? They are the ones to whom Bush should be issuing a formal apology ... no, Tom? The more London tube-users they blow up, the better, eh, Tom? You fucking scum.

As you well know, Tom, this is a battle between advanced western civilisation, warts & all, & primitive, vile totalitarian Islamo-fascist filth. And we all know where *you* stand in that conflict, Tom.

You call me a murderous blob. I throw the charge right back.

This is a tragedy to be sure, but I do hope that there will not be a rush to judgement. Obviously there will need to be an investigation but the news reports all suggest that the individual failed to stop when asked to do so by the police, instead running toward the tube platform and according to some reports jumped over the security barrier (where one normally has to present a valid ticket in order to pass). If that's accurate, it's not hard to see why the police thought they had a serious situation on their hands..

(That said, this isn't the first time armed Metropolitan Police officers have got it wrong - two officers are currently awaiting trial after killing a man carrying a wooden table leg which they apparently mistook for a weapon. This happened some years back and had nothing to do with terrorism.)
