A point that I forgot to emphasize is this- that much of the 40% who do not vote are quite likely laissez-faire supporters. And when I say laissez-faire, I mean not only in the economic sense, but also in the social sense. Most of the young people in Canada, no matter what their socio-economic status simply want to be left alone by the government and/or "The Man" to live their lives as they see fit. And without realizing many of them adopt laissez-faire as their political stance by default.

This disaffection with society is evident in Canadian youth by the mere fact that merely 25% of 18-24 year olds bother to vote in federal elections. By harnessing this disaffection, a libertarian political party could really make inroads in Canada.

Thanks,

T

It is, of course, great to see AS on that list.

Of all the things you could say about the ones above it, East of Eden at no. 29 sticks out...

I guess I should feel bad, but that book was kind of hot.

The higher ground way to look at it is that it was, after all, Anne Rice, even though under a surname, and she always does well.

AS is even on the list?  You couldn't tell it by looking at them.  Bastions of reason that those Canadians are.

Gone With The Wind at #4 is a nice call. That is one hell of a good book.

I'm just amazed that OOT-lander made the No. 9 spot.

Although, it is a bit too pop culture oriented, I think this list is quite good.

And, in response to Jody's post-

Despite the many mindful and reasoned Canadians that I know personally (myself included), on the grand scale, most Canadians are very complacent in their political thought and accept things such as socialized medicine by default. It certainly does not help that the four major political parties (Liberals (Minority Government), Conservatives (Official Opposition), NDP (Socialists keeping the Liberals afloat by a mere vote in the House of Commons), and the always entertaining Bloc Quebecois) all condone socialized medicine.

And, as I stated above, much of the youth are quasi-libertarian, which could be interesting as they take greater responsibility in society.

As well, not all of Canada should be stereotyped as a Socialist Paradise. Case in point- the province of Alberta- swimming in oil, no provincial debt, an 8 Billion dollar surplus, at least a degree of market forces in health care, and every man, women, and child in Alberta is getting $500 for Christmas. However, the major problem with the Conservative Alberta government is that it sees its current glut of wealth (thank you $65 oil) as a chance to reinvest in government education and health care. It should use this opportunity to cut and eliminate taxes, encourage even greater investment in its oil sands, and wind down its portion of the welfare state.

Good Night!

In addition to the previous post and to tie this thread back to the topic of Atlas Shrugged being on this TOP 40 list- I am sure that there are at least at a score of capitalist entrepreneurs in the rich oil sands of northern Alberta who derive great inspiration from the Ellis Wyatt character in Atlas Shrugged.

The situation in Alberta mirrors the one of Colorado in Atlas Shrugged quite well. Currently, Albertan oil is the major spur of Canadian economic growth. Thank goodness for these entrepreneurs and a relatively lack provincial government- we are all better off as a result.

(NOTE: Canada is a net exporter of oil, unlike the US)
