Those unprincipled pricks make me sick.

They rely on freedom to make their money but they're happy to undermine it to make more.

Why doesn't Gates simply keep all of the money he's giving to charity to make up for the lost revenue from telling the Chinese government to stick it where the sun doesn't shine?

We may not agree with the Chinese governing policies, but that doesn't stop the fact that they do have laws. Understanding this it is only right that Microsoft follow, and obey those laws if they wish to continue doing business in China. You can't simply break laws because you don't agree with them.

Well, you can. But if those that make the laws have the power to enforce them, no matter how unjust, there'll be consequences.

What would happen to internet access in China if they close Microsoft down ? Would that be worse for the cause of freedom ?

I agree with Nick - the Chinese doing this are like the dutch boy with a finger in the dike, and there are leaks popping up everywhere.  Bottom line is that in the end it does not matter, they won't be able to control everything, and the laws will slowly get changed.  You can't expect it to happen overnight, can you?  Every country took awhile to get from one point to another.
