Alright, here’s a partial from me: (I default toward sci-fi characters, I can’t help it)

Galt – Brad Pitt, Ben Browder

Dagny - Denise Crosby, Kate Beckinsale,

Rearden - Gary Sinise

Francisco - Antonio Banderas (the only one I’m sure of)

Ragnar – Johnny Depp, Casper Van Dien,

Eddie Willers - Michael Shanks

Lillian – Jolie, Claudia Black

James Taggart - Adrien Brody

Midas Mulligan - Ving Rhames

Wyatt - Kurt Russell, Clint Eastwood

Robert Stadler – Avery Brooks

I think Holly Hunter would make a great Dagny...somewhat similar to her role in Broadcast News.

Dagny: Jennifer Connolly - she's perfect!

Rearden: Harrison Ford; he's got heroic grimness down to a T

Someone suggested having spectacular no-names do all the lead roles, and then have all the runners-up be these stars everyone knows. That way you get the draw without the type-casting.

Pierce Brosnan as Galt - of course!! Though he would make a fantastic Francisco too. He's dark enough for it.

I've been saying that for years!  (If she could only loose the accent....)

Need I remind everyone that Jennifer Connolly is the wife of Paul Bettany aka Ragnar in my book?

OK, here are my two cents:

Galt - Val Kilmer

Dagny --  I agree with Katherine, Jennifer Connolly is much better.

Rearden --  Liam Neeson. A bit too old. May be Clive Owen?

Francisco --  Hugh Jackman

Ragnar -- Paul Bettany

Eddie Willers -- ?

James Taggart -- Timothy Hutton

Secondary Characters - Will think more on it. Just have ideas about a coupa:

Cherryl Taggart -- Molly Ringwald;

The Wet Nurse -- Chris O'Donnell
....

Woman fainted at the super weapon observation stand -- Hong Zhang

;-)

And more Asians (in addition to Hong, who plays the fainting woman).  How about Lucy Liu as Lillian Rearden; the woman you love to hate?

No, no, no!  Shirley MacLaine!  Wait -- too old.  Roseanne Barr!  Wait -- too fat.  Rosie O'Donnell!  Wait -- too masculine.

I am rapidly running out of names of Hollywood women I love to hate!

Robert Bidinotto suggested:

Bertram Scudder -- Jon Lovitz

How about Morgan Freeman for Dr. Hugh Akston? Either him, or Sean Connery.

Perfection.

And Jon Lovitz IS an inspired Bertram Scudder, eh?

Maybe as Lillian Rearden we could even cast his wife, Morgan Fairchild...

Brilliant! That'd explain why it took so long for Hank to leave Lillian. ;-)

Someone on another thread reminded me that I had a new candidate for Francisco.

I've long thought Adrian Paul would be terrific, but he's not getting any younger. However, having seen Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne, I think he could pull it off wonderfully. Like the Scarlet Pimpernel and Batman, Francisco is a man wearing a mask: a larger-than-life hero who feigns being a dissolute, hedonistic aristocrat as camouflage for a secret mission.

Bale in "Batman Begins" was simply superb in this role. He has the look, the intelligence, the physicality, and the devil-may-care panache to pull it off. Ladies, control your pulses:

Any questions?

Can he convincingly deliver the "money speech"? He's also a bit too young. I still think Hugh Jackman is better. This guy can do anything.

Cast against any strong and appealing Francisco and Rearden, you'd need a very strong Galt as worthy competitor for Dagny's affections.

Here's a possible John Galt who has proven that he can actually project being a "man of the mind" -- but who also projects great masculine strength...

That's right -- Russell Crowe.

I think I could see Crowe as Reardon easier. Though Heath Ledger seemed like he had everything it would take down from his Brokeback Mountain performance to do Reardon justice as well.

Hong, I think Hugh Jackman is terrific, and I named him as one of my "dark horse" candidates. But I think Bale is easily his equal; and yes, I think he could do the "money speech" -- though I doubt any speeches of that length would possibly be included in a film script.

I believe the way to dramatize that speech onscreen would be as a shorter, interactive debate with James Taggart.

Nay, Crowe is too bulky for Galt. I don't have a good idea for Galt yet. But I am set on my Francisco and Ragnar. And here is Hugh Jackman as Francisco D'Anconia:

Yep, let eye candy feast begin! ;-^

AGES OF THE CHARACTERS:

Several years ago, I worked this out. Here's an excerpt from a story timeline that I posted at The Atlas Society site:

We are told that John Galt, Francisco d’Anconia, and Ragnar Danneskjold all entered Patrick Henry University at age 16. This means that they were born the same year...We learn in Part I, Chapter 5 that Francisco is 36 years old...

From this point, the other characters’ relative ages can be determined. In the same chapter, we are told that Dagny is two years younger than Francisco (hence Galt), or 34 when the novel opens. We are also told, in the first chapter, that her brother Jim is 39, or five years older than Dagny – which corresponds with the fact that Dagny began work at 16, and Jim the same year, at age 21. Hank Rearden is 45 at the start of the tale – thus eleven years Dagny’s senior, and nine years older than Galt, Francisco, and Ragnar... Eddie Willers is introduced at age 32, or two years younger than Dagny... Philip Rearden is 38 – seven years younger than Hank, two years older than Galt or Francisco.

So you are looking for actors who can appear, relatively speaking, in those age ranges: mid-thirties to mid-forties. While films can take liberties, anything well outside of the parameters set by Rand in the novel will not ring true for fans, or thwart their expectations.

It would also be a very good idea to go back to the novel and read Rand's own actual descriptions of the characters. You may be in for a shock. I can't tell you, for example, how many people view Dagny as a blonde, rather than a light brunette with shoulder-length hair -- or think of Francisco as looking Spanish, when he actually looked more "Roman" or Italian. Many readers don't realize that Rearden is blond, and is 11 years older than Dagny, in his later forties.

Robert,
Thanks for that info. In that case, I think your choice of Liam Neeson as Rearden is perfect. Lillian should be older too. Among your picks I like Greta Scacchi the best.

Ahh, this is really fun. I will now go to my secret database and see if I'd come across some inspiring ideas. :-)
