Ed:

I've long figured that any of these kinds of  'sound-bite'-style interview-comments on any shows are merely excerpts from a bona-fide 'interview.' (An hr+1/2? for 90secs of presentation? U be robbed!)

I don't usually say this, but, I agree with everything you just said...including about poor Jar-Jar. I did (I duck) like him but, he did get a bit over-played where his presentation was itself obnoxious. Nothing like a 'good guy' that no one can stand being around.

Ed:

I'm surprised so much time was spent on Joseph Campbell, given that there was so much controversy 'back when' about his 'influence' on Lucas being merely hyped. Interesting, ntl, since much of what he said coincided with what you had commented on in the pre-'politics' section.

I must add, program-wise, that what little I'm familiar with re Colbert, I was a bit floored with seeing him talking, like, 'serious'

     So, when's the 'sequel'?

Forgive the hijack, but if you have a DVR you can record every episode of Eugen Weber's The Western Tradition or of Hew Strachan's The First World War - as well as other rare tidbits - and watch them when you like. House and Heroes are also big hits among Objectivists.

The DVR is the best obvious hardware invention since the walkman.

I second that! I can't even imagine living life now without my DVR!

Fast forward through the commercials and the crap segments on the news, rewind and save so you can get the quote right rather than relying on memory, Not missing Christopher Hitchens or Ed Hudgins on Book TV, recording Sister Wendy's adorably comic art commentary, going out on the weekends without missing your shows, having the DVR search for all movies with Orson Welles by keyword, if available, actually getting to see what the fuss is about House and Heroes and 4400, Watching the girls gone wild commercial 50 times in a row, and taping those old Battle Star Galactica episodes that air at 6am to watch at your leisure...

Well, I rarely watch the things I recorded any way... So, even if I have DVR, I doubt that I'd use it much.

Now back to the topic of the thread, at least I have now read Ed's articles. It is indeed interesting and very relevant how republics can turn into tyrannies. But as to how and why Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side, unchecked emotion? rage? irrational fear? Somehow whatever I got from the movie was just not compelling enough for such a transformation in Anakin.

Exactly.

Much of the problem with "Anakin" is that neither the child cast in the first movie nor the boy cast in the second or third could act. If you watch the first movie, you will see that the toddler playing Anakin simply mouthed his lines without understanding the emotional content of anything he said. The same, unfortunately, can be said of the pretty face who played Anakin in #2 & #3. Had they cast anyone with any acting ability whatsoever, he might have been able to carry the story, however thin that story was.

As it stands, the last three movies show that

(Big Budget) x (Ensemble Cast) x (Zero Story) = Zero.

I caught the rerun of this program yesterday, most part of it. I think they mentioned the Eastern influence in the movie, and attributed it to the Samurai culture. Though I've always thought that if Obi-Wan Kenobi is Japanese, Qui-gon Jinn is a distinctively Chinese name! And the force (aka Qi) and the methodology of Yoda are very much Zen-like!

Hong:

I think that it's safe to say that Lucas purposefully did a LOT of known multi-cultural 'diversity' (racial-cum-cultural) caricaturing, if not stereotyping as well as guessed-at/speculated alien enviro-culture imaginings, plus multi-mixing of  political styles in his 'far, far away' neverland.

He clearly intended to advance...a bit...on one of ST's intents. Check out the origin of 'Uhura' some time.

Ed, has the New Individualist interviewed Christopher Hitchens about his newest release?  I think the exchange might be mutually beneficial.

Ted -- About three years ago Hitchens spoke at our DC events on "What Are Western Values and Should We Return to Them?"

I'm half-way through his book "God is Not Great" and would like to either review it for TNI, interview him or perhaps set up another event at which he could speak.

By the way, I hope you've noticed that in the June 2007 issue of TNI I have a piece on Gingrich, God and the GOP; in the May issue I have a review of the two Sam Harris books; we have a review in the March issue of the Dawkins book; we have an interview with Michael Shermer in the Jan-Feb issue; we have a look at the James Randi conference in the April 2006 issue; and other such material in other issues.
