Excellent article, Ed! How fitting that they've chosen carbon as the heart of their attack, given that the only form of life that we know of is carbon-based. Ayn Rand said from the get-go that the statists and the mystics were anti-life.

I thought that Charles Krauthammer's observation on Obama's speech from the Oval office was right on target. He said that Obama didn't become the least bit animated or passionate till the last third of the speech where he began speaking of environmental regulations - of transforming our use of carbon. Dr. Krauthammer was right and I'm sorry that so few understand that Obama isn't doing an effective job of managing the oil spill crisis, not just because government is inefficient by nature, not just because Obama is a politician without experience in managing, but mostly because it is so far from his priority which is using this crisis to leverage legislation he would never otherwise be able to pass.

We are living through a remarkable period of history. The combination of the stimulus packages, the bailouts, the take-overs, empowered unions, demonizing business and capitalism, ObamaCare, the Financial Reform bill, and the Cap and Trade bill, combined with the various Executive decrees form a radical change - a transformation - in government. If one plotted the measure of statism on a graph, this would represent a massive change in a terribly short time - not unlike what occurred under FDR. It has so violated the fuzzy sense of who we should be as a country as held by most of the electorate that the November elections are going to be an equally sharp turn in the opposite direction. If that were the end of the story, it would be fascinating but not that scary -- good guys win in the end. But it isn't the whole story. We are faced with a massive economic collapse of some sort (too much damage has been done to be cured without real pain). And that is the mother of all crisis and even after the November the elites, the power structure members, the media, the intellectuals, the 'experts' - all will still be heavily populated with those who see the only solution to a crisis as government intervention.
