Not having seen the movie I can't say whether Wolski's judgement of it is any good.  At least he understands the difference between a movie and a novel, as a lot of the commentators don't.

What worries me is the number of times the review mentions that some element will be ineffective or incomprehensible to viewers who haven't read the book.  Such viewers are the huge majority of the audience the movie needs, and if it doesn't come across to them it's sunk.  We'll see.

The review is interesting as a symptom of current Objectivist politics.  Objective Standard used to be very orthodox, and you'd expect it to hate anything that come out of ARI.

Peter, do you not mean instead "... expect it to hate anything that comes out of TAS"?

I could fix it, if you'd like, Peter.  If its any comfort, I'm sure everyone knew what you meant. I did, anyway.

Atlas Shrugged: Part I is slated to open on April 15 in ten cities across the country. Additional distribution plans are still being developed and could include a campus tour or a pay-per-view event.

The only three cities so far confirmed for its release were such powerhouses as Plano, Texas -- in other words, this movie might open in a handful of multiplexes in minor markets across the nation.

So, unless it sells out there and starts getting great word of mouth, the movie might be almost a straight-to-DVD movie.

The idea of a theater movie was never the best way to go - especially with this pathetic distribution. They should be working a deal with one of the major networks for something like a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday showing of the entire 3 parts in one week. Then let it out to a big cable network, like USA a few months later. Then a few months after that -DVD.

Coming to Ann Arbor!
Goodrich Quality Theaters
3686 Jackson Road
New Movies Coming Soon to Theaters 04/15/11
Atlas Shrugged: Part I
Language: English
Genre: Drama/Mystery
MPAA rating: PG-13
Director: Paul Johansson
Actors: Paul Johansson, Taylor Schilling, Jon Polito
Plot: Part 1 of a trilogy based on the 1957 Ayn Rand novel: Dagny Taggart is a powerful executive in the railroad business, but watches as the government's increasing control over industry causes a strain on business, and ultimately society itself as the countries great minds withdraw their support and go into hiding.
... that would be "country's" ...  Whoever wrote that probaby went to a government school.

Goodrich Quality 16 Theaters is a chain with houses in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, so I would check your local listings and local theaters, rather than taking a second-hand report, you know, sort of as an epistemological habit...

Michael, how did you find this out??

Opening day/night numbers will determine whether or not the movie will be shown elsewhere.

p.s. I just demanded (using online software to the right) that this movie should come to Minneapolis.

I was the 317th person in my zip code to demand that the movie be shown here. If you make a demand, click "No Thanks" at the bottom right of the page with the options to use Facebook, etc. By doing that, there are only 3 things you need to provide in order for your demand to upload and be counted:

--age
--gender
--email address

TSI:  Michael, how did you find this out??  Opening day/night numbers will determine whether or not the movie will be shown elsewhere.

Tress, I lucked out, but basically, I started with "Ann Arbor movie theaters" in Google and looked under "Coming Soon."

I just did this for two AMCs near Pontiac and got no hits.  I  think that the nearest Goodrich Theater for you is in Canton, a bit of a drive, but the freeways take you there.

Later today, I will be near the theater, coincidentally enough, and I will see if I can buy my tickets now.

Ed's point is well-made and should be taken as advice.  Each actual request represents many potential sales. If I can buy my tickets now, I think that will carry even more weight.

Well if this is for real, it doesn't look good...

John Aglialoro, the producer of the movie adaptation of the classic Ayn Rand novel “Atlas Shrugged,” hinted that part three of the movie trilogy might be made as a musical.

The only rational explanation is that Aglialoro was pulling somebody's leg with that comment.
