| | On top of that, wearing these wristbands is incredibly self-demeaning! You have to wonder about the psychology of the people who promote such nonsense. What self-respecting person would follow this advice?! The implication is that nobody earns anything -- that it's all a matter of luck and privilege -- and that we should apologize for our success or achievements.
Of course, if no one can be said to earn what they have, then nobody can be credited for their successes or blamed for their failures. What this does is remove self-responsibility from people's choices and actions. One can already see the effects of that philosophy on the very people whose failures are attributed solely to a lack of "privilege," and who do not, as a result, take responsibility for them.
If you tell the "underprivileged" that nothing they do is their fault -- that it's all due to racism, exploitation and poverty over which they have no control -- can you expect them ever to take control of their lives or to act as if their individual choices make a difference? Nothing is easier than to blame others for your shortcomings, and if an entire group of people is constantly told that they are victims -- that their failures are not their fault -- it should not be surprising that they will embrace that idea with a vengeance and do little or nothing to make their lives better.
