Excellent article, Ed.  The muddled, almost non-message the GOP puts out explains why they are held in greater disrepute than the Democrats DESPITE the horror stories of this administrations six years.  I think the GOP is missing a bet by not attacking Progressivism itself (not just Obama) as dishonest at its root.

- That it never admits to its real goals.  It always lies and misleads people about the future it plans.

- That all of its major legislative drives are in the form of trojan horses (dressed up on the outside as 'good', while on the inside they are designed as just another large step towards their view of socialism).  (E.g., Global Climate Change, consumer protection, health care)

- That they never address the issue of a debt so large that it creates a form of slavery for our children and their children who will have to pay back the money being spent today.  Generations yet to come will be enslaved to this debt.

- That they tell lies to each of the 'identity' groups about any political opponent, while promising them things they won't get... to erode individual rights as a way to pave the path to total control by the elite.  And they do it despite the fact that it is a process that is toxic to the nation's social environment - turning it into warring camps.

- They believe that the ends justify the means - which is the destruction of morality through a twisted lack of logic - and from that premise will tell any lie they believe will further their drive for power.

- They want to hollow out and demonize the GOP, the Tea Party, conservatives and libertarians for the purpose of having a system that dishonestly looks like a two party system but is really a one party system in effect - a major step towards complete control by the progressive elite.

- Supporting voter fraud under the lie of "protecting minorities against vote suppression."

Politics is now a world numbed to the big lie.  It is as if they finally got logic and reason firmly divorced from their rhetoric so they can say anything, however ludicrous, and it will stand next a reasoned, logical argument as if they were equals and that is all that they need to say.

It is the massive degree of their dishonesty that has given them their successes, but it has the price of being a structure built on a feeble and vulnerable foundation.  Show the lies, not just in specific cases, but as the very core of their process - as the very heart of progressivism - and it can't continue.... they would have to totally regroup with new names, new disguises, new efforts, and it would take generations to get back to where they are now.  They have been trying to achieve the Fabian Socialist dream of bringing in socialism without a violent revolution - by a democratic vote (based up lies, and counting on ignorance).

That's what the GOP must attack.  As to what the voters would be the most responsive to.... honesty.  That is the opposite of the lies the progressives depend upon, so they would be winning votes while toppling the Progressive structure at the same time.

Whether it is from within or without, this nation doesn't get turned around until the current GOP is gone.   It is the current biggest impediment to providing an effective alternative to the Democrats.

That safe say nothing list is just pathetic.   It is like a declaration of either impotence or incompetence, malevolence or contempt.    Probably the latter.   These are the 'pros' who, trust them, fully understand just how stupid the voting electorate is. (Candidate for state office basically said that to me at my front door, explaining to me why it was necessary to cave in to Carville's bumper sticker argument -- "Heeeits the Economy, Stooopit!" -- right before I shut the door and took a hot shower to try and wash the stink off me.)   Lather, rinse, repeat, now 50+ yrs of tag teaming this nation into the ditch.   Our entire adult lifetime.  We've never known or seen otherwise.

This Priebus should be off somewhere harmlessly selling Priusi, or whatever the plural of Prius is.

What a screaming weasel fest.  As best as I can tell, this is as good as it gets in this Tribe.   It is just unsightly as Hell.    Perhaps part of the strategy to glom onto power; make the process look so unseemly that no sane person would want to get within a million miles of it.

But Jesus. Where is the flush handle?

regards,

Fred

Just because I haven't been posting doesn't mean I haven't  been reading. I hope the dialog continues, and not just on this thread.

Hi Sam,

Always good to hear from you.

In my post above, I said:

The muddled, almost non-message the GOP puts out explains why they are held in greater disrepute than the Democrats DESPITE the horror stories of this administrations six years.

I should have added that another reason they are held in greater disrepute than the democrats, is that they are constantly demonized by the Progressives - Progressives in office, those in the media, and the professors at the universities.  They go out of their way to teach all their acolytes the heavy use of sarcasim and personal attacks (even as blatant lies) as standard political operating procedure.

Combine that with the GOP's mixed messages and their muddled communications and it explains why the GOP rates below the Dems in polls.

But, I'll repeat what I said, "I think the GOP is missing a bet by not attacking Progressivism itself (not just Obama) as dishonest at its root."  Lies are only effective as long as they aren't exposed.  When they are exposed, they become a massive liability and rapidly destroy the political effectiveness of those associated with them.

Fred said,

I agree that the GOP - as it is - is the biggest impediment to providing an effective alternative.  But we have a political structure that is currently hardwired as a two party system.  Third and fourth parties can have some effects, but only from the sidelines.  The choices are A.) to re-wire the entire structure so that three or more parties can fight it out from some equal starting point each election and the winners then become a major party (till they lose), or,  B.) we convert the GOP to a party that is based upon individual rights and free association.

I don't know how we could re-wire the system.  And it might not be a good move.  In a political world that was closer to ideal, the two parties would each be honest representatives of the two key poles in the political universe - free versus forced - capitalist versus socialist - individualist versus collectivist.  From that perspective the question becomes how to move the GOP towards the adoption of libertarian principles.  Despite the fact that we humans have the ability to change our minds in seconds, it is unrealistic to imagine either of the following will happen soon:

1) In a short time the GOP might be leveraged into the party of liberty (even if unperfectly) and that they would then change the law and we will be mostly free.

2) The grass roots would suddenly change to where a majority become reasonably libertarian - fairly knowledgable libertarians - so that their votes would drive the country towards Liberty.

Neither of these are likely to happen in a short time because of the long head start that Progressives attained in the universities and the generations of students they have turned out.  Liberty MUST have a foundation of reasonably informed voters who grasp and vote on the the right political principles.  (And it helps if there isn't a massive popularity for Progressive principles in the media and the centers of learning.)   So... I see it more likely that we lose the war this time around.  Ancient Greece was lost.  Rome crumbled.  And it is more than possible that America will move into history as a shrinking totalitarian mess.  But I remain optimistic that Objectivism does win in the end.  Evolution is too powerful, and more so in the realm of ideas than in genetics.  The right ideas will win out, but sadly, not with a guarantee that it will happen in this, or the next generation's lifetime.

At least that's how it looks to me right now.  And the usual caveats apply: Trends are only trends till they aren't and every crisis or significant change in our political or economic status can trigger sudden, mass changes in beliefs and start new trends (or accelerate old ones).
