There are several related purposes universities fulfill in a rational society. They maintain the existing base of knowledge and the higher level skills of the culture. They pass those on to the next generation, least they be lost. And, as they work to maintain and teach from this base of knowledge, they improve upon it and add to it. But in today's universities there is a dynamic at work that seeks to shut down open thought and substitute a group-think kind of propaganda. The article Luke presented us shows the extraordinary degree to which this movement has gone. -------------------------- The article illustrates the inevitable dead-end of the Progressive's political correctness. And it is a far sadder and more absurd situation than I could ever have imagined. If someone wanted to create a system that turned young people into miserable, angry, intellectual zombies who would go forth as a kind of social robot to attack anything related to ability, individualism, reason or just the existing culture... how could they improve on this idiocy? This little, wounded snowflake is upset by a poster that “represents our ideal society and everything I am trying to fight against,” Now think on that. Is it an accident that our little cupcake is fighting against what is ideal? I'd put that in the Freudian Slip category and say that we have a psychology here that is attuned to finding what is good and whining that it hurts him/her/whatever and therefore must be fought. The offended student goes on to write, “It represents white power. Man power. Cis power. Able power. Class power. ECT [sic] ect." All of us happen to have some kind of skin color... not even as an issue of race, but rather due to the fact that we are objects and objects reflect light of some wavelength. And we happen to come in a specific gender - that's biology 101 (or it used to be). I'm not playing obtuse. I know that this is complaint is intended as a political reference to alleged oppression. I know that it is, in fact, Cultural Marxism that has arisen from the Frankfurt School of Critical Theoory and is designed to break down the current culture. I'm just pointing out that without that Progressive framework, it is unmitigated nonsense. "Able power" - if that isn't a cry that someone else's ability has to be attacked because it is an affront to those who are incompetents, then I don't know what else it could be. That is anger over the fact that success, and life itself, aren't automatic. If our universities weren't intellectually upside-down and inside-out they'd be looking for students with this kind of attitude - to refer them for corrective therapy! Not teaching and enabling this philosophically diseased state. The offended student goes on to say, "I am angry that I know the people who put this mural up, and I am anger [sic] because I know the people who let this mural be put up. Like I said earlier, maybe I am being a little sensitive, but it is how I feel. This represents, to me, our society, and I do not want it up on this wall." This clearly implies that emotion is to be given priority over reason. It only requires that some student claim to have strong negative feelings about something - something that has been defined by the PC culture. And finally, this poor triggered soul is in a state of anguish because the poster reminds them of "our society". At least on the emotional level this student really gets the purpose and scope of Political Correctness - to completely transform the existing culture in our society.
