The first time I saw and heard John Stossel on television, I thought that either I was hallucinating or that someone -- anyone -- would hear him and he'd be fired instantly. He is very, very good. He must have a large and enthusiastic following, or ABC would never keep someone with his ideas.

A friend of mine, Edith Efron, used to work for TV Guide, and she told me that no one realizes how important mail from readers is; if a writer consistently got supportive mail, that writer's job was safe. I recommend that whoever likes Stossel's work should write ABC and say so; it makes a difference. You can go to to www.abc.com -- then click on 20/20.

Q: To what extent have the ideas of Ayn Rand been a factor?
Stossel: Minimally. I read The Fountainhead in college and liked it but then somehow, working for the first ten of my twenty-eight years as a reporter, I was not exposed to any such ideas, they were just not on the radar screen. By co-incidence, I am now reading Atlas Shrugged for the first time and I am thrilled and astonished that this woman could know so much so many years before everyone else did and express it so beautifully. And express some of the theories I feel in my stomach, as I go out to do battle.
