Then what, for starters are "harsh licorice lands"?  Figurative language can be brilliant, but it can also be a crutch and a disguise for one's inability to 'show'.  I've read back over previous poems posted by this poet, and I have to say that he was better than this.

Licorice can be considered a color - black - and the reference  to a harsh barren place, perhaps?
