Is it me, or does this sound like any or all of the villains from Atlas Shrugged?

The most interesting part is that she's obviously thinking of the concept of "nationalizing", but can't come up with the word.

I guess oil and Waters don't mix.

Slip of the Tongue

No Scott, she didn't mean socializing, just nationalizing! Don't you know the difference? Evidently this Stepford Senator needs some retuning.

Here's the you tube clip:

I had to laugh at the woman in the extreme left (no pun intended) of that clip.  The blonde woman with the expression of, "Have you lost your flippin' mind!?"

Ms. Waters' expression after her slip of the tongue, trying to figure out how to get out of that hole she so delicately flung herself into, was an interesting thing to watch, as well.

The commentator saying that the oil companies have seen this before, in Hugo Chavez, was spot on.  Oh, she meant to say "nationalizing"...that makes it all better.  Scary!

... and let's not forget some of the other "champions of the working man"...

Max Baucus:
“Repealing tax breaks for Big Oil will stop these companies from running away with more taxpayer cash while they’re already high on the hog,”

Chuck Schumer:
“Oil companies are racking up obscene profits left and right while American families are stretched to the limit by skyrocketing gas prices. It’s time for Big Oil to pay its fair share so Americans can see a little relief. The windfall profits tax will do just that, and help spur innovation in the process.”

Maria Cantwell:
“We need a cop on the beat to patrol the markets.”

I recently read  -- and I can't vouch for the veracity of this -- that if all of the federal, state and local taxes on gasoline were repealed, the price would drop to ~ $1.50/gal.

Someone should ask our socialist protectors in congress who exactly is making the bigger profits off of high gas prices.

If this chart is correct, it would at least go down 66 cents out of the current $3.95.

Again, if I read that chart right, the gas companies make 19 cent profit on refining/overall profit.  I suppose we should add in the 6 cents for marketing/distribution/profit.  So, 25 cents compared to 66 cents.  I think you have a legitimate point, Summer.

Edit:  Notice that said chart comes from the California State Government website.  The same state Ms. Waters represents, I believe.

$1.50 sounds high.

http://www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/margins/index.html
This shows a breakdown of the retail price of a gallon of gasoline. The May 5 numbers show taxes of  $0.29 + 0.18 + 0.18 = $0.65. We could also impute some income taxes on the profits of retailers and refiners, say, $0.07. That makes a total of about 72 cents per gallon and puts the government take at more than 3 times that of refinery profit.

The governments' percent take has fallen as oil and gas prices have risen. That's because the taxes are per gallon, not a percentage of the price per gallon.

Yes, I do. I said "socialize" in the quote itself, because she said "socialize", albeit mistakenly.

That's specifically why I posted about her meaning "nationalizing" in the very first post under this quote!
