I'm taking the liberty of making an extensive quote from a post by Bill Dwyer on another thread:

She is ... a religious conservative who characterizes abortion as a "holocaust" against the unborn and indicts Roe v. Wade for allowing 50 million innocent unborn children to be "brutally murdered." She criticizes the ACLU as secular humanists with an "extreme ideology" that opposes school prayer and that endorses the sale of pornography.

Parker believes that most of society’s problems stem from sexual sins such as abortion and homosexuality. She says that legalizing same-sex marriage will increase the risk of HIV and AIDS by giving moral support to gays "perhaps on the theory that serving up another glass of wine is the way to help a drunk." In fact, of course, gay marriage would, if anything, reduce the spread of AIDS by promoting sexual monogamy.

She takes a strict, literalist interpretation of the Bible, even going so far as to oppose birth control on the grounds that we are to "go forth and multiply." She also rejects evolution because it conflicts with the Biblical story of creation.

And if that's not enough, consider this gem: At a Christian Coalition conference, she opened her speech by saying, "Anybody that believes in separation of church and state needs to leave right now." (quoted from "Christian Coalition Speakers Attack Church-State Separation," Church and State, October 1996, p. 7.)

I'm afraid that Newt, who I always liked for his intelligence has become far more deeply active in religion in recent years (producing DVDs with Christian themes, etc.)

I suspect that implementing religious gains via politics may be high on his agenda, higher than any of the political agenda that I'd agree with. My rule of thumb is that people who prioritize religion in that way, that put it above the constitution or view the constitution as compatible with their religious goals, should not be in office and I won't vote for them even if they are powerful supporters of lower taxes, balanced budget, small government, reducing regulations, etc.

Thanks, Steve. You are always at liberty to quote anything I say (except, of course, if it will get me in trouble!) ;-)
