| | My 11th grade English teacher introduced me to The Fountainhead when she suggested I read it for the essay contest (before this incident, I hadn't even heard of Objectivism). The essay contest was announced in a weekly newsletter which was circulated through my high school. The essay contest was sponsored by the Ayn Rand Institute.
I don't think my school offered The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged as recommended reading, though The Fountainhead was available in the school's library.
I'm not sure if I would have ever discovered Objectivism if my teacher hadn't suggested I read The Fountainhead. I'll have to visit her one day to thank her.

Ayn Rand is one of those things that a lot of us, when we were 17 or 18 and feeling misunderstood, we’d pick up. Then, as we get older, we realize that a world in which we’re only thinking about ourselves and not thinking about anybody else, in which we’re considering the entire project of developing ourselves as more important than our relationships to other people and making sure that everybody else has opportunity – that that’s a pretty narrow vision. It’s not one that, I think, describes what’s best in America.
