My earliest memory is from age two.  I think it's possible Helen could have remembered that single concept.  Also, she wasn't kept in a cage or anything, she was free to explore the world as best she could. Who knows what kind of sense she made of the world before "Teacher" showed up. As I recall, Helen already had a sign for "mama," that she either made up herself, or was taught.

More than likely she had a basic idea that there was a world about her, but didn't have the information to get beyond the initial conceptions she formed like water and mother. She had the concepts to learn: identity and existence. But without any further disciplined education she would have languished is my guess, being that others would have continued to treat her as if she was mentally capable to learn. And that's the importance of the clip, I think, that no matter how hindered a human being comes into the world, when 'shown' enough of the world, that human being can and will learn. It's just sad that post-modernists and existentialists keep pretending the mind is just a 'narrative,' among other things.

Hello everybody- just thought I'd let ya'll know that Part Eight is posted and give some info on the process. I'm frankly not as happy with this one technically/artistically. I rushed it a little because I was impatient to move on. Here's the interesting thing about producing this speech- every time I try and dramatize the negative case- against altruism, collectivism, religion etc (in this case evasion and the unearned)- I'm instantly less involved emotionally. The more I focus on the negative presentation the less emotional the videos become. Because what emotional tone can you set for those parts besides bitterness, sarcasm, condemnation, scorn etc? It's satisfying to express your contempt but it's no emotional fuel. Compare parts 1-4 and parts 5-7. Night and day. This is the first time I've gone back to the negative tone- it just stops being fun!

The best thing that is coming out of this project is the positive expression of the philosophy in images. I really am going to try and stay on the positive from here on out- only maybe 2 or 3 of the projected 12 that are left will be negative- the dark has to be there in some ratio for the lighter sections to have power. But I think the ratio should be 3 positive to 1 negative from here on.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Here's the link to Part Eight, which I've also posted on the main page:

Though Richard has expressed a certain disappointment in it, I think he's successfully kept a rather negative subject interesting by incorporating an imaginative sense of stylistic irony.  Great job, Richard.  I look forward to the rest!
