I like the guy playing Reardon too, but the director is awsome. I really hope he does catch the essence of Atlas Shrugged

I'm lovin' the Rearden choice, too.  This is the best interview with the director so far.

One thing Johannson said, "this movie represents what's best in all people" is very similar to Rand's statement "in the name of the best within us".

I have long worried that a movie of Atlas would focus disproportionately on the negative and the political - the bad guys, the state of the culture, the moral and mental midgets - and less on the idealistic heart of it: a vision of greatness, of integrity, of strength in the main characters.

It's iffy to focus on only one quote from the director, but J's statement above is very promising, sense of life-wise.

I'm pleased and encouraged to see that the director has a passion to want to capture the book as is and stay on message, rather than going Hollywood and twisting the meaning.

This may turn out to be an awesome trilogy.

And apparently I'm not the only person who has had thoughts along these lines about the book (from the linked comments thread above), though I'm nowhere near as harsh in my assessment -- hopefully this movie will attract people who couldn't get into Ayn Rand's writing style:

"Subsidize Me!|7.28.10 @ 5:00PM|#

I don't know a damn thing about making a movie, so I was easily impressed.

I was struck with the most severe case of doublethink I've ever encountered whilst reading the book - how great a story told so badly. If ever there were a case for why editors are necessary, it's Atlas Shrugged.

I think that it's possible for a movie to accomplish the addition-by-subtraction Atlas Shrugged really needs... I hope this guy can pull it off."

I don't like it how people are so up-tight about how "Ayn" is pronounced. If she wanted it pronounced differently she should have spelled it differently. For example like "Ain" (Spanish) or "Ine" (English).

Mayan culture, Playa del Sol... Frankfurt-am-Main rhymes with Frankfurt-am-Rhein und der Kaiser spricht leiser.

So... the immigrant gets off the boat at Ellis Island and they ask his name and he writes A-b-e-l and says "ah b'l"and the customs guy says, "In English that's "ay b'l" so the guy crosses that out and writes E-b-e-l.  And the clerk says "Ee-b'l."  So the guy crosses that out and writes I-b-e-l and the clerk says "Eye-bull."  So the guy gives up, gets back on the boat and goes home.

Did the director just tell Dagny to throw a drink in Francisco's face? No, thank you.

I hope someone gives the post-production crew the idea to do a digital grade of the film. This is the process that "Lord of the Rings" went through that pops the colors so vividly-- Atlas could use that sort of push into stylization.

You mean at 4:51? That's not Dagny, Richard.  Don't know who it is, but I'm guessing it's one of Francisco's eye candies.

Too early in the book.

The Johansson movie stops with Wyatt's Torch.

James marries Cheryl in Part 2 ... and only later does she have reason to throw anything at him, though she never does, not even an accusation.

(Gonna hafta wait and see.)
