I can't watch this awful thing. Printed stories are bad enough, but at least I can deal with them and still sleep well. Graphical reporting is another matter altogether for me.

How anyone can not see Islam as pathologically sick is beyond me. The good Muslims around the world should be separating out the good from the bad in Islam like a doctor separates cancerous tissue from healthy tissue. How would we look at a doctor who refused to excise cancerous tissues and insisted on keeping the body as is?

Which raises the question - what do you consider the 'good in Islam'?

Robert,

I personally don't find any good in Islam since I won't take my ethics as a matter of faith, the concept of submission appalls me, and I don't need to go cherry picking for ethical tidbits in such a barren plot when there are much richer orchards to harvest.

But I have no strong objections to people holding beliefs that I disagree with as long as those beliefs don't involve interfering with my life. Others can choose to submit to Islam, to pray 5 times a day, to only eat certain foods, etc., etc. But they should not threaten me with death or try to impose Sharia law on me. That is the distinction I'm making on picking the 'good' Suras.

Here are some samples of 'good' Suras:

004.002 To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance ( by mixing it up) with your own. For this is indeed a great sin.

(I had to delete 003.003 since it implied that it was okay to take a captive woman as a wife, what with kidnapping and rape not being a good thing!)

004.004 And give the women (on marriage) their dower as a free gift; but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, Take it and enjoy it with right good cheer.

004.005 To those weak of understanding Make not over your property, which God hath made a means of support for you, but feed and clothe them therewith, and speak to them words of kindness and justice.

005.003 Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than God; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, God is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Yes - and to play the devil's advocate, isn't that really 'cherry picking', the same on the flip side as being ascribed to those claiming the 'extremist Islamists' use cherry picking to support their view? or perhaps one is being used to express principles and the other as molifyings to 'mis-inform' the true principles?

Imagine a cake loaded with a bunch of poison pills. If you take out the pills and throw them away, that isn't cherry picking. It's fixing the cake.

The terrorists cherry pick by focusing on the poison pills but hiding behind the sanctity of religious fervor and the pretense that killing people is justified because it is in their holy scripture.

The good Muslims ignore the poison by cherry picking the bits of good cake and pretending that they belong to a good religion - but it doesn't diminish the fact that it is a toxic cake if it isn't fixed.

I'm certainly not advocating cherry picking (leaving the bad bits in there), and I'm not even advocating fixing this cake - I say throw it all out and pick a better a cake. But for those who want to be Muslims and be good people and joining the cultural war against terrorists, they need to stop cherry picking and start fixing the cake.

As Wafa Sultan said, believe in stones if you want, just don't throw them at me.
