What does Halloween celebrate? The harvest! Cornstalks and pumpkins symbolize our abundance from hard work. The "devil" image is made up from a horse, a goat, a bull and a donkey, simply farm animals. The various monsters and spooks are meant to be laughable, to denigrate and minimize our fear of death. In fact, in our abundant harvest, we have pushed death back away from our doors. The Jack o'Lantern brings the light of reason to light up the darkness of ignorance. In our time, children dress up, not just as images of death reduced to ridicule and humor, but as their favorite superheros and other characters from popular bootleg romantic fiction. We give them candy, a high calorie, low nutrient treat to enhance their rational enjoyment of this productive holiday by providing their energetic little brains with lots and lots of glucose. Myself, I have given out money at Halloween. (See here.) Dressed as a pirate (who ignores immoral tariffs and taxes) I have given our dollar-sized Mardi Gras Doubloons, colorful tokens of aganism. Dressed in a tuxedo (with masque), I have given out paper money of the world. Is it any wonder that Christian zealots would ban Halloween? Do not surrender this celebration of success to the mystics and altruists! | ||||
