| Detective John McClane suffers well. From Die Hard through Harder and Three to this Live Free or Die Hard, his ability to "take a licking and keep on ticking" is now iconic. That allusion is offfered by the bad guy who calls McClane a "Timex guy in a digital world" and says that this dooms him to failure. Of course, it does not. From the first crawl over broken glass to the last scene where he kills the bad guy by shooting himself in the shoulder, Detective John McClane is indestructable and indomitable.
This was reviewed and given high marks in New Individualist. I was surprised not to see it here on RoR.
I confess that I did not expect much. This was a One Dollar Cinema birthday treat from my wife. We met at a mall, had sushi and went to the movies. The choice was mine. I was just looking for some action. In point of fact, I got a movie that satisfied on many levels. There were a few holes in the plot, of course. The titanic way in which McClane is never killed is beyond luck, but does carry a lot of pluck.
- You shot down a helicopter with a car??
- "I was out of bullets."
McClane does not accept any of the villiain's excuses or justifications, but makes it perfectly clear that he is coming to kill him.
- What's your plan?
- "Rescue Lucy and kill them all."
- I mean a plan like in how to achieve that.
Along the way, the nerd rises to the occasion and becomes "that guy" the hero who does what needs to be done because no one else can and thus earns the right to be McClane's daughter's boyfriend. There is some good bureaucratic interaction.
- The White House sent us to be liaisons.
- Well you just stand in the corner there and liase and if I need anything I'll ask you.
