Def Con Posted by Michael E. Marotta on 8/06, 6:32pm | ||
DefCon attracts more attention each year, especially as computer security becomes a daily concern for all. (See NPR Survey below.) "Started 19 years ago as an underground gathering of sometimes-nefarious computer wizards, DEF CON has sprawled into a 15,000-person, four-day convention where anyone with $150 -- in cash only, please, lest these hackers give up their identities -- can learn the latest tricks and trade of computer hacking, lock picking and security breaching.(Last year, I joined ArbSec which grew out of DefCon 734, the local chapter. As a result, I joined a "Lock sporting" club and can pick a five-pin Schlage.) Nearly half (48%) of Americans under age 60 who make less than $30,000 now have a computer at home, and 31% have access to the Internet at home. Moreover, the most recent computer owners are more likely to come from the groups who have historically been less likely to be computer owners. Recent computer owners under age 60 (those who purchased their first computer within the past two years) are more likely than longer-term owners to be low-income (30% versus 14%) and to have a high school education or less (59% versus 33%).
