St. Louis Post Dispatch v.Ayn Rand
Posted by Chris Johnston on 12/26, 9:27pm
Joe Pulitzer would be proud. One of the fathers of yellow journalism, he loved sensationalism, scandal, and populist rants. His intellectual heirs carry on his work at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

In an "editorial" entitled, "Christmas and the failure of greed," the unnamed writer obviously finds themselves quite clever. The oddity is, the lack of understanding shown in this pathetic attempt at populism should make one weep. In fact, there is very little original material in this one, and most of that is either infantile, or just plain wrong.

For example, in response to a few quotes from Leonard Peikoff's article, "Why Christmas Should Be More Commercial":

It should go without saying — but we will say it anyway — that despite its intellectual veneer, Mr. Peikoff's view is so much reindeer poop. But let us extend the hand of mercy: This year, of all years, must be a tough one for the adherents of Ms. Rand.
High-minded deep thinking, that. "Reindeer poop?" Excuse me while I wipe my eyes from the belly laugh.

To explain the paper's anti-capitalistic (and hence, anti-American) stance, the following bit of nonsense is put forth:

Laissez-faire capitalism has had a very rough year. U.S. taxpayers are bailing out Wall Street, banks, automakers and other capitalists to the tune of at least $1 trillion, with more surely to come. Around the world, the story is much the same: Unrestrained greed turns out be a lousy philosophy on which to build a civilized economy.

The effects of its mistakes are cascading through the economy. Many Americans, whether out of necessity or fear, have said that they planned to cut back on Christmas and related holiday shopping this year.
You get the drift. Those who could never understand laissez-faire capitalism are blaming a system that has never been in place for problems that exist because it has never been utilized.

I'm no economist. I'm not much of a philosopher. And even I can see that the looters are running the till.
