Size Does Matter. The Longest Novels. Posted by William Dwyer on 7/11, 12:23am
Interesting to see AbeBooks.com featuring Atlas Shrugged along with revered classics like Gone with the Wind and The Count of Monte Cristo. If you go on their site, you'll find that a first edition of Atlas in fine condition with Rand's inscription is priced at $17,500.00. The original price? $6.95. The inscription reads: "To Liz and Raymond Newman, Cordially, Ayn Rand," dated 9/12/78. Another signed first edition listed at $16,093.83 is dated and signed by Rand on 8/22/57. Still another (not listed as a first edition) is priced at $15,000 and is inscribed "To the Hon. Reuben B. Robinson-/ -with the compliments of our / mutual friend John C. Gull-/ Cordially-/ 10-17-57 Ayn Rand". A first edition, first issue, but not signed by Rand, is listed at $7,950.00. Wow! Another one not bearing Rand's signature and not even listed as a first edition is priced at $5,000.00. Incredible! Yet another not signed by her but by Nathaniel Branden is priced at $4,500.00. These were all 1957 editions, but a signed Tenth Anniversary edition is listed at $3,500.00. Another 1957 first edition, first issue not signed by Rand is also listed at $3,500.00. The seller added this comment: "A recent study of Rand's cultural legacy concluded that no single work of the 20th Century had influenced more individual readers than this objectivist allegory. Additionally, Harper's Index reports that 12% of all Playboy Playmates since 1959 claimed either this or Rand's The Fountainhead as their favorite book, although our attempts at using copies as bait continue to prove futile." Gosh, I have a first edition, first printing not signed by Rand, but it doesn't have a dust jacket and the cover is rather worn. Let's see . . . would any of you like to buy it for, oh, $1,000? Hmmm? ;-) Another copy listed at $3,500 is a signed 10th Anniversary edition. Several others not signed by Rand are priced at well over $3,000. The cheapest signed copy I could find is listed at $2,750.00. And there are many early editions that are priced at well over $1,000. If you have a signed copy of Atlas or of any Rand book, you may want to hang onto it. Its value will continue to appreciate. I've got one, but I'm not selling it! :-) - Bill
