Hi Katherine,
Good to see you sharing the art works that inspire you. This is an interesting piece. The man is beautiful, and looks youthful too! Though it's hard to fully appreciate a sculpture just by looking at a picture of it. Hmm, but, is it a bit too literal in the interpretation of the "self-made" part?

Hello Hong,
I do not feel the sculpture for too literally, for me it is the inspiration all this is possible, as far as one works on it. As soon as one strikes the stone in form grows one, otherwise one remains like raw stone breaking into, immovably. I find the immobility of humans in thinking worst, many have only in a direction thinking way, our brain the possibility in as many variations gives to think us, I always describe it as multidimensional thinking, whereby one itself, for itself take and maintain optimum solution can, until one comes again to one point, at which one examines and changes this if necessary. As Mrs. Rand always says: Examine your principles. They are correct, live thereafter. If do not change it.

Robert, Darling,
when u put a picture in a forum, it will be nice when u first saying what u think about, lol.
For me is the liberation of a woman in our world. To be no slave of a other, most of woman are still this.

This work struck me right away. I see man cutting himself free from nature and going on to where only man is capable.

At that point, it wasn't my intention to make long commenting on another work, Dearest, but to show she did a companion piece to compliment the 'Self-Made Man'... and, yes, to invite what others might see in her showing a differencing of a woman making self as opposed to the man making self...

Lieber Christina!

Es ist ein großes Vergnügen! Robert has talked so much about you and now you are finally here!

“I find the immobility of humans in thinking worst,”

Well said!

You thoughts on “re-examining” one’s “optimal solution” are also interesting. It seems to me that you are saying that we should keep an open mind on things and when presented with new facts, we should adjust our thoughts accordingly. There are things that we don’t yet fully understand, or things we think that we understand but there may be yet other contexts that could challenge our previous convictions. What refreshing thoughts! I look forward to many future exchanges with you!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Hong

PS. To Robert: your glowing words on Christina are fully justified!

Hello Hong, it makes me happy also much it and their thoughts to become acquainted
with. We will have some exchange surely still. I have very many questions and place her also with given cause. I knew not very much of objectivism and Ayn Rand, to this topic I came only by Robert. By the way do they speak a little bit German? The German greetings were very nice. Thanks.

Last year I showed an Objectivist friend of mine the "Self Made Man" sculpture at the Cordair gallery. It's one of my favorite items in the entire gallery. My friend told me that the sculpture looks like it was inspired by another sculpture from about 60 years ago. "Man Carving His Own Destiny" by Albin Polasek. I'll include a link to a picture here...

Enjoy! :-)

Joe,

That is cool!

The first star I clicked was of the Star Trek TNG gang. (Sorry, no tribbles there!) The second was of Kofi Annan. Man, I am still trying to wash that taste out'a my mouth....bleeeaaa!

Cool link though.

Edit: I just came back to tell you that I am still clicking on stars!

Gary, I didn't even notice the stars (they weren't working in AOL, but they're working in Safari), I was too busy looking for the pic of Hirschfield drawing himself. Thanks for pointing those out!

For some odd reason, I'm drawn to the Bea Arthur drawing...

Did you find any Nina's?
