Re: Hillbillies. If you rent the movie "Winter's Bone", you get an insight into some slice of that.
What struck me most about the film was two things:
1] Other then the 'economic backbone,' the film would have looked identical if shot in 1935 or 2010. So, the same pathetic pictures used in the 60's to launch Johnson's flagship are freshly waiting to be taken today, compelling as ever.
2] The modern 'economic backbone' -- endemic black market meth labs -- is what a desperate people are forced to do after years of waiting for the Great Society programs to finally make a dent on poverty by 'fixing the system' and bringing 'fundamental change.' Success, like education, is primarily taken, not given.
This is what our collective tribal pinhead compassion does for the downtrodden, after 5 decades of Great Society goodness: we've managed to replace stills with meth labs.
I mean, other than tube the rest of our economies along with them, in this mad race to the bottom.
