Is there any way to reconcile all this acrimony? Phil apparently has hands-on knowledge that could be very useful if presented and accepted properly, and maybe some very good ideas to look at.

People may not like how he expresses himself, but I don't think he's the enemy. Underneath it all, I think he is actually rooting for the success of RoR and the other ventures.

It's not my call for others, but personally, I am trying to listen and evaluate more than condemn at this point.

Michael

I see much value in Phil as well, but lately he has been full of pessimism and critical words, rather than using his experience and knowledge for something productive.  I think this is hurting his ability to do anything productive, and rightly so.

When I'm attacked I'll defend myself. When I see mistakes in the Objectivist movement I'll point them out.

If you think Solo needs no improvement (or someone who attacks me personally is being fair) or I am not "positive" enough, you are free to point that out. Facts are facts.

Phil, this is RoR not SOLO. They're located here: http://www.solopassion.com/

Phil, I share the view by many here that you are quick to judge flaws but painfully slow to put your own specific ideas or work on the table.

You're impossible.

JoRo sez:

But take the rational self-interest as being what's really moral.  While people may adopt a lot of the behaviors (productivity, integrity, etc.), there's a huge obstacle with them accepting that those are moral.  They may say "You should do that", but I don't think they'll pick up "It's moral to do that."

That kind of revolutionary change is going to be a tough one.  I can't imagine it being picked up in the same way those less fundamental ideas are.  This would require explicitly making a major choice.  They'd have to recognize that they're bucking the trend.

Joe, it starts with God. That debate is becoming louder every day. That's the revolution and it's happening. And it's going to be ugly. I don't know that mankind will survive it (and I'm an optimist).

Slowly people are being cornered into considering the existence of supernatural stuff. We considered it early. Existentialists have pressed the issue for years without offering a positive ethical alternative to go with it. And that's where the ugliness comes in. The world believes that no happy ethic can replace altruism. And as bad as altruism is it's better than nihilism. At least we can co-exist with altruism. Nihilism is bad news and that's what I see as the lazy generation's new philosophy.

The story doesn't have an ending, of course. It could play out in a number of ways. I do think people will see that most of mankind's problems have been solved by Capitalism and Reason. But it's impossible to know if it'll happen fast enough or be large enough.

Let's burn Phil to a stake and spend a lot of time on it. That ought to go far in spreading Objectivism.

Jason,

LOLOLOLOLOLOL...

OK. No problem.

Er... any thoughts on activism?

(I personally suggested studying the Founding Fathers, who were A1 activists to me, but that idea didn't "take" too well. I've seen some other good ideas pop up and then get set aside with a single comment, like Ciro printing and giving out articles to his customers. But lots and lots is certainly being written about non-contemptible Phil's contemptible motivations, which I try to see and simply can't. Makes a guy wonder...)

I think we should move to a separate thread if I'm going to be burned at the stake, crucified, or flayed alive...and I think we should have all three choices open to be fully fair.
