We should not let this go by. If we do, then we need condemnation.

Yes, I like some of his movies and characters, but those heroic characters he played would, I hope, not tolerate the kind of bigotry he displayed. I think he is talented and has done some good in the world. However, his tirade against Jews has to have consequences.

Nick

I condemn Mel Gibson's horrible drunken behaviour.

There. Feel better now?

Mel Gibson's involvement with the shadowy Opus Dei and the popularity of "The Passion of The Christ", are far more disturbing to me than his drunken, anti-Semitic ramble.

Yeah. Most of Hollywood is already steering clear of this guy, and Disney may cancel his miniseries. But that's chump change.

What will REALLY bring dire consequences raining down on his head is the moral condemnation by OBJECTIVISTS on this blog!

Gee, isn't it satisfying to have such POWER?

I just finished watching a rerun of Friday's Colbert Report. I laughed my ass off when guest William Donohue of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights said this about Mel Gibson: "He's a good friend of mine; he's not an anti-Semite".

I love it when irrational mystics make asses of themselves.

Yawn, why worry about this. Some Hollywood celeb gets drunk and does something foolish, so what? I just rewatch Braveheart and remind myself he was once capable of making decent cinema.

It's kind of like why I enjoy Dubliners by James Joyce and don't worry too much about Ulysses or Finnegan's Wake. Unless I've had a few Guinnesses of course :-).

I think, though, that Mel's been "in the closet" with his anti-semitism. I don't think there's any going back now ;)

Possibly.  I'm continually amazed at humans' ability at making asses out of themselves. It is exceeded only by people who take themselves too seriously. Gibson is starting to look over 50 and I think that bothers him. I hope he doesn't become acting's version of Bobby Fischer ;-).

The head of the Anti-Defamation League thinks Gibson should be accused of a hate crime. I don't know which is worse, Gibson's behavior or the overreaction to it. I still haven't heard exactly what it is that Gibson said. But this incident doesn't entirely surprise me. With a few exceptions, movie actors have never struck me as paragons of rationality, even though they're viewed as demigods by the rest of society. Of course, I must exempt Rand fans, like Brandon Routh, Sharon Stone, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, et al. I didn't see Gibson's Christ movie, because I don't like movies based entirely on someone's hero (religious or otherwise) being tortured to death as some kind of self-sacrificial atonement. Gruesome and disgusting! I couldn't bring myself to watch it, even for its well-acted realism.

Has anyone got any insight into his new movie? It looks like some weird Emerald Forest remake au naturel.

Yeah, it’s funny now, Bidinotto.

We learn a lot about a man’s soul when he has a few in him. And you’ll rue the day that you get arrested with a few in ya’.

“You need to come with us, Sir.”

“You an Objectivist? You one of those damned, dirty Objectivists?! I don’t see any dollar sign hanging on your neck, but you sure look like one those mothered-by-a-rat-Objectiv…” Thud.

I have no idea what the deal with Mel Gibson is. I think he is an excellent actor, but he seems to have a few screws loose.

It's unfortunate that this will become his legacy, but he wouldn't be the only Hollywood type to do some really bizarre things. He's still probably saner than Tom Cruise or Michael Jackson.

And unlike those other two crazies, Mel Gibson doesn't have any kids. Thank goodness.

Maybe these guys are just trying to outdo each other: "How crazy can you be?"

Doesn't have kids? I'd be really surprised. He's an extreme Catholic (thinks Vatican II was a mistake).

Wrong. Gibson has a LITTER of kids. A "good Catholic," he.

Jon...that was funny. But rest assured: I would NEVER be caught in a compromising position. Ever....

I mean, except for that girl back in '92. And she was a LIAR, I tell you, a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR. I mean, how the hell could I know? She sure didn't LOOK like she was 13...

That's my error. IMDB says he has seven. That's pretty scary indeed.

I should have went there instead of Wikipedia.

It is sort of the nature of actors that they do not have anything in their heads not put there by someone else.  That is why actors like Julia Roberts, Martin Sheen and Chrissie Hynde are interesting.  Of course, there is a limit to that, as well.
One of the best lines in Team America was: "Let's all read newspapers and go on talk shows and repeat what we read as if it were our own ideas."
So, if Mel Gibson is a Catholic and Kirstie Alley[1] is a Scientologist, it is to be accepted as one step better than having nothing in your head -- though some of these people come pretty close to that when they (ahem) "speak out on the issues."

The fault is not so much theirs as ours -- well, not mine, and maybe not yours, though Mister Nick and some others here seem to have made Mel Gibson part of their lives without ever actually inviting him over for dinner.

When, Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? came out, I was working a project at Honda in Marysville, Ohio.  I heard one woman tell another about the movie, warning her what to expect, saying, "George Clooney is not really a doctor." Martin Sheen was never really president of the United States -- but Mel Gibson might really be a theologian.

[1] edited thanks Chris.

I think George Clooney is someone worthy of respect. I liked his academy award speech, and I've heard his commentaries and seen him talk enough that I can respect his intellegence and reasoning ability.

Martin Sheen also has made some stands and tried to be a person of integrety.

Mel Gibson is revealing his shallowness in his apologies. He doesn't seem to get it. Why is it wrong to hate an entire group of people - just because it is considered wrong by the Catholic religion? This is really on one of the lower levels of Kohlberg's model. He hasn't made it to the principled stage yet, even if his character in Brave Heart has.

bis bald,

Nick
