You just need to learn some html coding.

That's what I'm talking about! I like the better control the gimpy box gives me rather than the "user friendly" other box. It's like those child-proof medicine bottles. Blasted things.

You telling me I need to learn another language just to make my posts look nice only on Solo? Sorry.

Geeze, I've NEVER been able to get that block quote thing to work, either in IE or AOL's version of Netscape, or even in Firefox.  I always thought it was because I didn't understand the interface or something.  I still think it's just me, though.  It probably works just fine, I just don't have a clue how to use it.

Yeah, Phil, same! Everyone else has these cool grey boxes around the quoted part, and bolding. Instead I am always using *asterisks* and CAPS to emphasize things, and my posts look a bit spastic sometimes if I am very excited.

I guess I could be putting in html, I didn't think of it, but that's like multiplication for me... it doesn't flow, I have to stop and think about what I should type.

Well, whatever these two lovely ladies say I'm going to agree with--I'm no fool :-) ... I thought computers had advanced to where you have visual interface and buttons...Having to go back and type embedded programming codes is -SO- 20th Century.

Not happenin'.

Maybe, but creators haven't time for such things - we leave it to the technicians...;-)

Robert,
I know you're just joshing, but (and I have enormous respect for visual artists -- I have no such ability) -- those 'technicians' as you call them are just as creative as any painter or writer.

I'm 100% with Rick Pasotto and Sarah House on this one. The gimpy on Firefox puts me in total control of what I post. I hate interfaces that second-guess my intentions, and that pretend to know better than I what I ought to mean. If such a thing is implemented here, please give me an option (perhaps in my preferences) to opt out. Gimpy forever!

I think I've found the trick... The only way it works for me is when I first type the complete message (including the quote), and then select the quoted text and click on the "quote" button. Unfortunately the (rather universal) codes
and
don't work, I find that still the easiest way to handle quotes, especially when you have multiple and/or nested quotes.

If you want use HTML codes, do an online search for "Bare Bones HTML." You'll get a list of the codes, including underlining, italics, bold and a host of others. Unfortunately, the HTML code "BLOCKQUOTE", which normally would enable you to quote a passage as an indented, grayed block of text, doesn't seem to work here at REBIRTH OF REASON, even though it did on SOLO HQ. (Splendens, what is the "quote button" you say you're clicking on? I don't see anything like that in the gimpy text box.)

As for the other codes, the italics are done with the less-than symbol (on your comma key), followed by an "i", followed by a greater-than symbol (on your period key) immediately before the first character of what you want italicized. This starts the italics. To end the italics, do the same thing immediately after the last character, with one addition: put a forward slash before the i. (I can't use the less-than or greater-than symbols to illustrate this, because they don't show up as typed.) For underlined text, do the same thing, but type a "u" instead of an "i"; the same for bold, where you would type a "b". If you want to center something, do the same but type CENTER.

You'll see all this and more in the list of HTML codes at the "Bare Bones" site.

I don't know what a "gimpy text box" is, but when I type a message, there is a box at the right with the following buttons:

  Bold           Quote
  Italics          Link
  Underline    Break
  Large          List
  Medium      Bullets
  Small          Header1
  Verdana     Header2
  Arial           Header3
  Serif           No Font
  Sans-Serif  View Source
  Helvetica

        Post/Preview
Preview with Spell check

I thought everyone would see the same box...??

Only if you're demented enough to use IE in MS Windows.

Time to switch to a modern browser, eg., Firefox.

Ah HA! Thank you, Calopteryx, that might be the problem...actually the problem is that once I click the block quote button, I can't get out of the block quote gray box. My cursor  stays there, no matter what I do, and I can't get out of it to add anything, or change anything. Is there a trick to that?  SEE?? I just did it below, and now I can't type anything below the freaking gray box!  Is that normal?
Is there a trick to that?

Teresa, you could try pressing the "Quote" button again. Or if you are using the RoR mail, you can press the button.

Teresa,
Type what you want to quote first, then hit <enter>, then go back and highlight what you want to be a quote; hit <quote>
like this,
and you're still able to type.

I use IE only in this case, while this edit system doesn't work properly in my modern browser Opera (probably while MS is violating some standards here). I've never had this problem in other forums.

And no, I'm not yet demented, but thanks for your concern.

I had exactly the same problem (I don't think this is normal!), and therefore I use the quote option only at the end, when all the text has been written.

Nope.

Neither on the PC in Firefox, nor on the Mac (Safari).

Strange... I see that box not only in IE but also in Opera. It can also be found in the html source file. Does Firefox suppress it for some reason?
