I'm not sure where to put this, as I didn't see a board for introductions, but...

Hi.  I'm 18 years old, and an avid Ayn Rand fan.  I do not consider myself an Objectivist (more of an Aristotelian liberal/libertarian, influenced by Henry Veatch, Roderick T. Long, Murray Rothbard, Douglas B. Rasmussen, and Douglas J. Den Uyl in addition to Rand), but I have had interesting conversations with Objectivists in the past, and I agree with Rand on many points.  I am sure that I will have many interesting conversations and debates here. :-)

Hello Matthew. My name is Dean, nice to meet you.

To call myself an Objectivist is too big of a pain in the butt, but I do agree with most all positions that Ayn Rand had.

I'm a software developer, I've got an interest in various electronics/computers, financial, AI, and communication.

What do you do or what are you preparing for?

You are NOT 18!! <kidding>

Who got you interested in them there fellers, Matthew?

I'm Teresa, by the way, and completely harmless.  ;)   Very nice to meet you.

Pleased to meet you, Matthew.  Hope you guess my name...    ;o)

Really!!  Geez, I didn't learn to read 'til I was 30ish.  But once I did, it wasn't long before I was reading the entire Corpus Aristotelicum.  In the original pig-Latin, of course.

Like Dean, I'm a software engineer.  But unlike Teresa, I'm not harmless.    The effects of prolonged exposure to me have been described as similar to drinking reactor water, eating too many kumquats or leaving home without your American Express card.

Anyway, velcomen, bienvenue, welcome, come on in.

Teresa harmless?

I call my self an objectivist lower case, Matthew, since I accept Rand's essentials but disagree a little on human nature, sexuality, and some other details.

Welcome, Matthew.
Objectivism is one thing and Randianism is another.

Hi, Matthew,
You may not have read everything about this site yet, but one rule is that the new guy has to buy doughnuts for everyone.  I'm kinda partial to crullers.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

And to Dean, I am going to study computer science and business.  I plan on being a programmer, maybe in game design.  As for your interests, have you ever read any Vernor Vinge?

And as for the dougnuts...

That's the best I can do on short notice :-)

I've read Rainbows End (2006). Do you recommend any others?

I think your career choice is good whether you end up developing games or not. Software development rocks if you are capable and motivated : ).

All of Verner Vinge is great reading.....  oddly, my preference, perhaps due to an affinity to her, is Tatja Grimm's World.....

I agree with Robert, Vinge is an incredible author.  I would especially recommend A Fire Upon The Deep, A Deepness In The Sky, and Marooned In Realtime.  I haven't read Grimm's World yet.  Is it good?

Welcome, Matthew!

I'm a vocal, (capital-O) Objectivist who has been called opposite things, like the familiar term: "Randroid" AND the unfamiliar term: "Saddamite" (a term for folks who think the Iraq invasion wasn't publically justified).

I'll let you decide what to make of these opposing claims about me. You seem like you have a pretty good head on your shoulders (your reading list is, in itself, poignant). I'd welcome constructive criticisms from you, and I promise not to consistently withhold from returning that favor.

;-)

Welcome to this fine forum, young sir.

"Saddamite"?  Never heard that one before :-)

I myself don't think the invasion was justified, but inventing a rather dumb pun for it...?

Matthew,

Let's just say that some of the arguments (for the Iraq War) themselves, would show up on the "rather dumb" side of a continuum -- a continuum which includes all of the kinds of arguments that humans could ever make for things. And if you are being the type to "buy into" those kinds of arguments ...

;-)

Ah... misinterpreted what you said.  I thought you were for the Iraq invasion.  That whole thing makes more sense now :-)
