| | I sometimes admit to being a political conservative because in many ways I am personally and culturally a traditionalist. So, I missed the usual posting here from someone or other and therefore offer this belated bon mot to everyone here. Thanksgiving is a typically American holiday. In spite of its religious form (giving thanks to God for a good harvest), its essential, secular meaning is a celebration of successful production. It is a producers’ holiday. The lavish meal is a symbol of the fact that abundant consumption is the result and reward of production. -- “Cashing in on Hunger,” The Ayn Rand Letter, III, 23, 1
Thanksgiving celebrates man's ability to produce. The cornucopia filled with exotic flowers and delicious fruits, the savory turkey with aromatic trimmings, the mouth-watering pies, the colorful decorations -- it's all a testament to the creation of wealth. -- "Thanksgiving: The Producer's Holiday," Sunday, November 12, 2000, By: Gary Hull, Ph.D. The Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights.
Personally, I am spending this Thanksgiving alone. My wife flew down to help me set up our apartment in September. She came down again for my birthday earlier in tne month and will be here again for the holidays when she drives down with rest of her stuff. Meanwhile, I am reading and writing and watching videos - "Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore, for instance. And speaking of being productive, I am celebrating a new fulltime job, as a security guard at the city courthouse, concierge and front man for the police.
