I sometimes admit to being a political conservative because in many ways I am personally and culturally a traditionalist.  So, I missed the usual posting here from someone or other and therefore offer this belated bon mot to everyone here.

Thanksgiving is a typically American holiday. In spite of its religious form (giving thanks to God for a good harvest), its essential, secular meaning is a celebration of successful production. It is a producers’ holiday. The lavish meal is a symbol of the fact that abundant consumption is the result and reward of production.  -- “Cashing in on Hunger,” The Ayn Rand Letter, III, 23, 1

Thanksgiving celebrates man's ability to produce. The cornucopia filled with exotic flowers and delicious fruits, the savory turkey with aromatic trimmings, the mouth-watering pies, the colorful decorations -- it's all a testament to the creation of wealth. -- "Thanksgiving: The Producer's Holiday," Sunday, November 12, 2000, By: Gary Hull, Ph.D. The Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights.

Personally, I am spending this Thanksgiving alone.  My wife flew down to help me set up our apartment in September.  She came down again for my birthday earlier in tne month and will be here again for the holidays when she drives down with rest of her stuff.  Meanwhile, I am reading and writing and watching videos - "Inconvenient Truth" by Al Gore, for instance.  And speaking of being productive, I am celebrating a new fulltime job, as a security guard at the city courthouse, concierge and front man for the police.

Happy belated Thanksgiving, Michael. And congratulations on the job as well.

Speaking of jobs, I had to work on Thanksgiving, but I'm thankful to be able to have a job in a bad economy currently so terribly corrupted by entirely unproductive, and often destructive, politicians.

I'm thankful we're not ruled by Puritans.

Now ... if only there was something we (or He?) could do about the Democrats and Republicans.

I'm thankful for getting custody of my son this year and that he has gone from failing grades last year to 80s and 90s this year and is thriving.

On a conservative website, Obama was criticized for not mentioning God is his Thanksgiving Day remarks. So, I wrote the following response in the comments section of the article.

"Oh, for Pete's sakes, why are conservatives so obsessed with religion and religious references? Why are they so enamored of mysticism and the supernatural? If truth be told, the idea of a holy ghost is as fanciful as all the other ghost stories that people like to entertain, none of which can be given any rational support.

"If thanks be given to anyone on Thanksgiving, it should be the producers -- the capitalists and workers -- who created the bounty of wealth that we now enjoy. Let us give credit where credit is due -- not to an incorporeal spirit, but to real flesh and blood human beings whose creativity has enhanced our lives and well-being beyond anything we could have imagined. It is not God, but man the creator who has bestowed his blessings upon us."

It's a funny thing, but this came to me when I  googled "Rebirth of Reason Thanksgiving Producer's Holiday."  The Search here on RoR has been unfriendly for almost two years telling me that my IP address issues too many search requests.

Also, funny, although I got the job I refered to, I was never given any hours. I waited two weeks, then applied to different firm.  That job as supposed to be with Allied Barton.  Acutally, since December of last year, I have been with Securitas.  I worked for both in past at different times.  I know that business magazines tout the best companies to work for, but my experience is that all that really matters is the local office and your direct supervisor.

Anyway, as I said in another Thanksgiving post, I am grateful to be working.

Happy belated Thanksgiving.

I'm grateful for the potentiality of man. For instance, being born a man is much better than being "born" a rock, a plant, or an animal.

:-)

That's something that you can be grateful for.
