Many states had these laws, but North Carolina was perhaps the most egregious. The laws were broad and on the books into the 1980s, I believe. Many "officials" including school teachers had the power to order sterilization of a "defective" person.

In the true and original Blade Runner by Alan E. Nourse (not the movie version of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick), a future is posited in which, in order to get welfare and therefore free medical care, you had to agree to be sterilized - a proposal not limited to one obscure science fiction novel. In the book, massive avoidance by clients and doctors alike created the need for "blade runners" - medical assistants who prepped and cleaned up.

This reminds me about how it was okay to kill Mormons in some states (until the mid-1970s). Apparently it was not considered murder if they represented an ideological afront to your most-cherished conceptual schematisms.

There seems to be a new push for something like this, but "they" want to fix ideologues with modern medicine, rather than by merely taking their lives. What we need is a kind of an Aryan-race science ...

... oh, wait ...

... oh, shit ...

:-)

Ed

p.s. Notice how, when a conspiracy theorist talks, he uses the phrase "they want" without ever explicitly defining who "they" are? I'll try to break ranks with my peers. One proponent of eventually medically fixing people who have become stricken with firm ideology is David Brin.

This was a favorite cause among early 20th-century progressives.  Margaret ("weeds in the garden of humanity") Sanger was a promoter.  Goldberg's Liberal Fascism has information on this part of history.  He points out that the Nazis used to cite her.

I wonder if victims of those quacky "gay to straight" outfits would qualify?  Maybe they should.

Homosexuals are the new "defective humans" for the highly ignorant sector.

I've never heard of anybody in the US being forced legally into such a program.  In England in the 1940s Alan Turing, who, more than anyone else, invented computers, was ordered into hormone treatments by a British court.  This eventually drove him to suicide.  Being a huge fan of the movie version of Snow White, he did it with a poisoned apple.

Legally forced by government, no. Legally forced by parents, yes.
