I think there are times when each "tool" is appropriate for the right "job," e.g. sometimes a crisis arises that requires a team to "brainstorm" a solution in a hurry. But I do appreciate the contrast and thank MEM for sharing. As I have seen it work, "do not criticize" is a worthwhile approach to getting as many ideas as possible thrown onto paper whether working alone or on a team. Later, the "critical editing" can cull the wheat from the chaff, again either alone or on teams. The best sequence seems to be one where team members work alone and then bring their most well-reasoned ideas to the team for final hashing. John Allison of BB&T discussed the synergies of "Independence and Teamwork" at OCON 2011 and explored these ideas in detail.

Another way to interpret this comes from Anthony Robbins in his book Unlimited Power in the chapter on "metaprograms" or sorting patterns. Some people tend toward matching each other and others toward mismatching. Get a group of matchers together and they will be totally convinced of the rightness of their ways uncritically and go charging off the cliff. Get a group of mismatchers together and they will never accomplish anything. Throw them on the same team at the same time and the mismatchers will disrupt the matchers before they can form any plan. The best sequence involves teaming the matchers together to form their best plan they can imagine and then bring a mismatcher to blow holes in it so they can revise it as needed. Repeat the process to develop the most solid plan possible.
