| | I think there are times when each "tool" is appropriate for the right "job," e.g. sometimes a crisis arises that requires a team to "brainstorm" a solution in a hurry. But I do appreciate the contrast and thank MEM for sharing. As I have seen it work, "do not criticize" is a worthwhile approach to getting as many ideas as possible thrown onto paper whether working alone or on a team. Later, the "critical editing" can cull the wheat from the chaff, again either alone or on teams. The best sequence seems to be one where team members work alone and then bring their most well-reasoned ideas to the team for final hashing. John Allison of BB&T discussed the synergies of "Independence and Teamwork" at OCON 2011 and explored these ideas in detail.
