I regret to admit that I have become tainted/tarnished.

Whenever a new boogeyman -- a new scapegoat -- is put in front of me by the state-controlled media, then I am probably going to jump to the conclusion that it is another example of the tail wagging the dog. Evil requires a scapegoat and if there aren't any then they are "manufactured" out of thin air. Adolf said that the reason for society's ills was the Jewish people. He was dead wrong about that but it served his ulterior purpose (to gain power). Stalin said it was the capitalists. Whoever it is, it is absolutely not the guy rushing this all-important message to you about who your real enemy is, and how you are supposed to relinquish your individual rights in order to fight the new-and-often-purposefully-vague evil.

I am not sure if stuff like this is any different from the historical, master-minded denunciation of Jews or capitalists. If I had to say what I think or lose my life, I would say that it is a set up in order to restrict internet access for US Citizens by declaring that the internet is too unsafe to individually surf.

That's exactly what it sounds like to me, too.  Just how these toady "journalists" always come from a position of agreement is evidence enough, at least to me, that we're not getting the whole story.

Tres,

If this goes down as you and I seem to think that it will, instead of being put into real concentration camps, we would be put into virtual concentration camps -- able to access only that part of the worldwide web that the government has publicly declared as "safe." It will supposedly be for the good of "the country" and it will be deemed necessary because of outside "evil."

Yeah. A place plastered with Obama wallpaper, buttons, drop-downs, n'stuff like that. We can't even enjoy the Oscars without having to endure the image of at least one Obama! They're everywhere! Go away!

That woman is such a dreadful creature. It amazes me how many people attempt to glorify her as a beauty queen. Anyhow as the saying goes.. You can put lipstick on a pig...

Tres,

Tell me about it. I just say a video of 1st lady in something like an SNL skit dancing with Jimmy Fallon dressed up like a Mom (the skit was "Mom Dancing" or something like that). To add insult to injury, I heard on NPR that internet service providers are starting to snoop on individual activity and then they are sending warnings and then they are even restricting individual internet access to various paying customers. The ostensive reason they say they are doing this is in order to fight internet piracy. For internet service providers who have no personal stake in the matter (who have nothing that you could "pirate"), they say they are doing it to prevent potential backlash.

But why would you put your tail between your legs and start snooping on your neighbors if it doesn't directly benefit you to do so? What potential backlash is there to refraining from being a snoop?

Learn to program! That is the advice from Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and others on YouTube today. They were speaking to children, but it applies to everyone.

Open a command prompt and ping rebirthofreason.com.
It returns the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the website.  The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) name "rebirthofreason.com" is a convenience. Your browser gets that translated into the numerical address.

Internet addresses are blocks of four numbers, each from 0 to 255 for a total of 4,228,250,625 -- with more on the way, 4 billion is no longer enough.

You can look up those numbers - start with Google, if you want, but whois.net is the traditional
tool.

If you really want to surf the web, put interesting blocks of 4 into your browser, and see where you end up.  (Just be careful out there...  there's demons and zombies, and worse....)

The point is that the government is just people who get paid whether they do anything or not.  Some are internally motivated, of course, but most go home at 5:00 PM.  The governments that control the internet locally, like North Korea and Iran and Egypt, have state monopolies in telecom.  They can do that.

Look, AT&T launched its "Telstar" satellite to carry TV, etc., across the Atlantic over 50 years ago... and they were six months behind the Amateur Radio Relay League, which built and launched its own OSCAR for ham operators.  (I think they built 11 over the years.)
