Since I recorded this some days ago, Obama's Park Service has reinforced barriers at the World War II memorial to keep veterans and the public out. His Park Service has blocked off the parking lots at the privately owned and operated Mount Vernon home of George Washington which is open during the government shut down even though those lots are jointly owned by the Park Service and Mount Vernon. Obama's Park Service has even intimidated private concession operators around parks to close. What a nasty and vindictive piece of work occupies the Oval Office! Bet the veterans are disgusted that they fought and bleed for the likes of him.

Well... I dunno... I mean what is a "National Monument"? I was happy to learn that Mount Vernon is a private foundation, but apparently their patriotism prevented them from challenging the Park Police. I would have called the sheiff on them and stayed open - but that is why I am never in charge of anything like Mount Vernon (or much of anything else, really.... successful management is predicated on the axiom that to get along, you have to go along).

Anyway, I think that Independence Hall should remain publicly owned and in the care of the Federal Government.  A few others would qualify, also: the Library of Congress, National Archives.

The Alamo is operated by the State of Texas's General Land Office.  Their website today announced that they are OPEN and NOT part of the Federal Government.

The Smithsonian is closed and that is the kind of federal operation that should be privatized.  At the very least, as Smithson gave a large bequest in the first place, the SI should be and remain self-funding.

The Library of Congress is actually a library FOR Congress. When I was a staffer I did some research there, But I suspect the public gets the most use from it.

Great job, Ed!!!!

Our major problem is illustrated by many of the mindless comments about your article that were coming from university grads. I mean that literally... the comments were carried from the university to different places, unthinkingly, by the people typing them, and whose only mental function was to carry the ideology from place to place like a virus distribution mechanism. They picked it up, carry it around, and type it out whenever triggered by the right keywords. If you took away the Progressive's talking points, most of their fevered little supporters would be left wordless, sitting in their parent's basements making unintelligible, angry noises.

I think everyone with a mind of their own could not read your article without thinking that there might be something there worth considering.

Thanks Steve! Yes, as depressing as Obama's offenses is the idiocy coming from individuals in institutions that are supposed to educate them rather than indoctrinate them and stifle their capacity to think with dogma. Fine, disagree with me. But offer arguments and facts. I asked a few respondents who protested the horrors of private management whether they've ever visited Mount Vernon. Or the National Geographic Society.

Pandering paternalists require an ignorant and mindless citizenry. Thinking people would have no need for them.
