The closest airport to Kissimmee is Orlando(MCO).

There will be two (heated) pools, two hot tubs, a fully-equipped kitchen, air conditioning and TVs.  But why watch TV when you can hang out with all these interesting Objectivists you've come to know on RoR?  For those who are getting rooms, all the sheets and towels are included.  There is also the usual washer/dryer/dishwasher.

Jody, you should bring your beautiful wife.

I have other plans at the end of May, but why are SoloPassion and Ror not holding a joint conference? Soloc4 was already a pretty small conference. A lot of the people are friends and went to Soloc4 together...and the more people, the more speakers the more interesting a conference. Plus with the loss of Barbara and other splitting off, having Linz, etc as speakers and convivial people to hang out with would probably be a savvy (and popular) idea.

Maybe there was a reason for two separate projects and leaders (SoloP, and Ror) -- I'm still not convinced that that was wise -- but certainly pooling resources and friendships and socializing whenever possible, especially when small seems like something that should at least be attempted.

Ethan, for chrissake! the fact that you are "convinced" without offering a reason or a full explanation has as much value as: "yes it is...no it's not...yes it is" does in grade school.

Remember that we are Objectivists. We ask lots of questions... and explanations are needed for things.

The only things that are "self-evident" are axioms and the direct evidence of the senses.

Maybe it’s better left alone, Phil, for um, for ah, for chrissake!

Joe has expressed his heartfelt admiration for Linz’ achievements. There has never been an objectivist break so civil and benevolent. Not a peep from the SOLOPassion side. Not a peep from the RoR side.

Now, on Joe’s announcement of a conference, you choose to remind that we are objectivists and explanations are needed for things. Screw explanations. No one was condemned and no one pointed fingers. It’s like we’ve all seen the most amicable divorce ever witnessed, and then you jump up demanding that it be explained. Shit, man!

God. Fuck. Jesus, Phil. Can’t you just wait until Joe dies and Ethan prints his diaries?

In the case of a divorce there is personal animosity and purely personal issues are and of nature ought to be private. But animosity doesn't seem to be the case here. So, perhaps they could hold a conference together. Even if it had been previously necessary to divide up what was already a very tiny organization, some of the strengths of larger numbers might be re-creatable on a case-by-case or ad hoc basis. Why would you think that -explaining- differences of vision or simply of emphasis, such as a stronger activism focus in one case, would lead to hostilities? Once an organization lays out its objectives, of necessity that is a contrast to other organizations. But transparency helps. It can let people see which organization best fits their needs.

Competing (and complementary) business do this all the time. They don't try to hide things which their clients or customers ought to know. (That does not include personal things like "divorce" or "sex life" which are very bad analogies.) They don't' try to keep a secret how many subscribers they have.

You know, having a joint conference between two competing but friendly very tiny organizations might be a good idea to at least consider for another reason: Being together may generate ideas for joint projects, chance to sit down and work out old issues. Maybe Free Radical, which is obviously small, can work with or support both endeavors? (Maybe even reconcile/reconsider?)

Jon: “There has never been an objectivist break so civil and benevolent. Not a peep from the SOLOPassion side.”

Hmm. How about this: “There are lots of pseudo-Objectivist sites built on treachery & passionlessness that should satisfy.”

We know the way that Linz works out his animosity: he selects an abstraction and lets fly. At least one of the “passionlessness” sites he has in mind is surely RoR.

If this stings, the truth hurts. SOLO was on the way to becoming the “third way” of Objectivism. But now its energies are dissipated into the sand. RoR is less than the old SOLO – and the current SOLO is a shadow of itself.

This is a sad outcome. It is also one that could have been prevented. And once again, Ayn Rand’s vision of a radiant future has been postponed.

Ethan: “Brendan, Phil…Please follow Jon's wise advice and take it to another thread.”

Jon’s comment was: “Start a new thread”. That may be read as an advice or a command, but the attribution “wise” presupposes a supporting argument. I haven’t seen one.

In fact, it could be argued that the recognition of a potential competitor is a rational consideration that should be taken into account when one is undertaking this type of commercial venture.

So: is there a potential competitor which might eat into the market share of the RoR conference market? I can think of one. But if that potential competitor cannot be mentioned on this site, please provide a direction, so that we can know that the subject is off limits.

Good thing you mentioned 'potential', since it is a far  difference from 'actual'.

Brendan,

This is a thread about the conference. It's not about the split up of SOLOHQ. Move it to another thread, I'm asking you nicely.

Ethan: “This is a thread about the conference. It's not about the split up of SOLOHQ. Move it to another thread, I'm asking you nicely.”

Thanks for the advice Ethan. One of the deficiencies of the SOLOHQ site was the lack of a clear direction – people would pop off at all sorts of tangents, often prompted by the principal himself! I’m reminded of the old saying about keeping the pisser in the tent, especially in view of Linz’ preference for large quantities of the red vino. I guess that piece of advice is redundant now.

But what are you going to do when he comes roaring round with a machete? Who in RoR has that slasher mentality? Cordero, perhaps?

I also take your point about the split-up of SOLOHQ. That was a sad occasion, since it robbed the Objectivist world of one of its great synergies: the lucid arguments of Joe Rowlands coupled with the passionate intensity of Lindsay Perigo. Sadly, such a partnership was not to be – we may never know the full truth of this matter, and much must be left to conjecture.

Yet, in the fullness of time, something may be known of this episode. Otherwise, onward and upward, and many thanks for this space.

Jon and Ethan,

You're right.

This should be on another thread (about how to move forward, improve things, strategies, plans, etc.), since this thread is about conference preparation and a place for people to exchange plans, etc. I would have been wiser not to distract that with my original post, so I apologize.

Phil
(I just got a private email explaining the split, why a joint conference wouldn't work, and I see why it's not a matter of ideological explanation that needs to be made public.....so I can now see why the split was necessary and was properly handled without public acrimony...and I withdraw the joint conference idea: I was simply uninformed. Sorry!)

I should have said "another thread" first, instead of just posting a comment that I was convinced.

In case people are wondering, I was not the one who sent Phil a mail explaining things.  I have no idea who was, or what he was told.  Since I haven't told anyone all of my reasons for my part of decision, he should take it with a grain of salt.

As for why it's not a joint conference, it's my money and RoR's staff putting this conference together.  It's our conference.  That's all.  If Lindsay or anyone else from SOLO Passion wants to attend, they're welcome to.  There's still some available rooms (although it's filling up quickly).

My husband asked me where the RoR conference was going to be held, and I replied, "Kissimmee, you fool," and he said, "Not now, Artemis, I want to know where the RoR conference is going to be held!"  :-)
