I'll be doing an update in the next few days. For now:

1.) I'll be doing a preview of my speech for the TOC conference. "Eliminating the Altruistic Baggage". It's about how even though we reject altruism and promote rational self-interest, often altruistic premises are embedded in the moral language and method. It'll be about how to weed it more thoroughly, and how to rethink ethics to be really consistent with rational self-interest.

2.) Ed Hudgins, TOC Executive Director, will be giving a speech on his own approach to activism.

3.) There will be a roundtable discussion about RoR, what our plans our, where we should focus, how TOC could fit into that picture, and anything else the future might hold for us.

4.) I was planning to bring a DVD with some entertainment that might be interesting to Objectivists.

Kurt, are you prepared to give your own talk you suggested?

My plan is to have most of these on Saturday during the day. Friday evening and night will be a time to socialize and meet everyone. Sunday might end up having some field trips, depending on people's interests. I wouldn't mind seeing the Space Center. There's beaches, Disney World, and more.

Monday we have to check out early, but depending on people's flight schedules, we'll probably spend part of the day as a group.

If anyone has any other suggestions, let me know.

Joe, does anyone giving the talks use visual aids?  I was wondering if anyone can show PowerPoint slides.  It would be useful for me, I think, though it may not be necessary.

I don't think anyone is going to have visual aids.  Luke said he can get a projector (the old fashioned type), so if you make transparencies, that should work.

Yes, I will be bringing a clunky old-fashioned transparency projector.

Given that the talks are mostly happening Saturday, I might disappear a few hours Sunday afternoon to go to my GMAT preparation class back in Cocoa.

If you need me to do something Friday to help with the setup, let me know.  I plan to take that day from work anyway.  Just drop me an RoR Mail as I seldom check this thread.

Hi everyone,

I've updated the conference info page.  Go here for more info, including the address of the site.  There's still room for more people.  Please contact me if you're interested in attending.  It's rapidly approaching!

For those of you who have been watching the news for our state, we have had many brush fires over the last few weeks.  The result has been a constant haze of smoke in various parts of central Florida.  It finally rained today, so that should help some.

Visit http://www.cfnews13.com/ to get the latest information on this.  If you have allergies, take due precautions.

Some roads have periodically closed due to the driving hazards these fires and their smoke create.  Be sure to check for road closures before your arrival at this site:

http://www.eoconline.org/EM_Live/roadstat.nsf

Your main concerns will be with the counties of Orange, Seminole and Brevard.

UPDATE: Just so you know of the seriousness of the fires, I just got this in my work e-mail:

MEDICAL SMOKE ADVISORY

Due to the recent wildfires in Brevard County, there is a large amount of smoke in the air. While for most people this is merely an annoyance, for some it is a potential threat to personal health and safety. If workers are sensitive to smoke or have allergies or lung problems, they may experience some symptoms such as sneezing, eye irritation, coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath. To reduce the possibility of health problems due to smoke, avoid strenuous activity and minimize exposure to areas of high smoke concentration. Staying indoors in an air-conditioned house or building will help reduce your smoke exposure. Also, drive with you air conditioner on, and keep your air conditioner on recirculate. If employees experience severe discomfort or need medical attention while at KSC or CCAFS, they should go immediately to one of the on-site medical facilities. Dial 911 if someone is in severe respiratory distress.

I use Yahoo! Maps and have not checked yet, but they look reasonable.  Try Yahoo! Maps and see what you find.

Luke, I'd be interested, but I'm trying to get some bang for the buck here. If I find it, I'll post it -- but does anyone know the cost of the 'main attractions' in and around Orlando?

Sea World = ?

Disney World = ?

??? World = ?

Epcot Center = ?

Space Center = ?

??? Center = ?

Given everything they offer in the park, I think the price is well worth it.

If I'd go to Orlando again, I'd like to go see a Cirque du Soleil show.

Hong,

When I went to Disney in February, parking was $10/day. Has it changed?

Ed, I couldn't even find the street name in mapquest but yahoo did find it, seems to be right off La Isla Dr.

All, I think I still have my travel books from Orlando from a couple years ago when I was there. Might bring those so people can see attractions/prices/etc.

Lastly, I'm assuming there's no internet access at the house, right? Other than maybe the phone lines which honestly I don't even know how to use! I usually take my laptop on trips but if there's no connection at the house, it's one less thing to carry.

Wow, I thought I posted to this thread yesterday but now I can't find that I actually did. Hmm.

My question was/is... do we know anything about the availability of parking at the house(s)? I have been planning to rent a car, but I know some people are driving and I am just wondering if parking will be a problem if there are too many vehicles.
